Ruin looms for family man on child porn charges

June 2, 2010

THE personal and professional ruination of a man who once ran one of Victoria’s biggest crowd control companies will be complete today when he is sentenced on child pornography charges.

Karl John Aschhoff, 51, faces prison after being exposed in an international investigation with possessing digital movies at the ”higher end to extreme end of child sexual abuse”.

His email address was found on records of a subsidiary of a Russian-based firm involved in selling child pornography.

The married father of two, a life member of the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club, had also accessed pay-to-view websites and had more than 1000 pornographic images, graphics and video files on two computers.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court recently heard he had resigned as director of Australian Corporate Conciliation Services, which employs 200 crowd controllers, and had ”destroyed” his involvement with lifesaving.

Magistrate Sarah Dawes was told Aschhoff had already been ”enormously” punished by detection, exposure and through the ”trauma” of having to tell his family.

His barrister, Phillip Priest, QC, said: ”It really doesn’t matter what he’s done in the past or will do in the future … such is the repugnancy with which the community holds” the offences. ”He will be stigmatised for the rest of his life and be on the sex offenders registry for life.”

Prosecutor Senior Constable Lachie Natoli said in 2003 US authorities started a joint taskforce to detect people and corporations involved in child pornography, before Aschhoff was raided twice.

Commonwealth prosecutor Ranjani Padmanabhan said Aschhoff’s offending was not sporadic or isolated and argued the need for general deterrence was paramount given the exploitation of children ”for this type of sexual abuse”.

Pyschologist Jeffrey Cummins said Aschhoff was not a paedophile or a hebephile (a person who is sexually attracted to adolescents) but was interested in ”viewing” females aged between 16 and 18. He said Aschhoff ”now appreciates child pornography is not a victimless crime” and had ”displayed some victim empathy”.

Described by character witnesses as a loving father and ”loud, obnoxious” larrikin, he pleaded guilty to two Commonwealth charges of accessing child pornography and one state charge of possessing it.
