A Commonwealth Games bronze medal gymnast already serving a jail term for sexually molesting three girls two years ago was yesterday sentenced to a further 18 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a four-year-old girl early this year. But the magistrate, Ms Jelena Popovic, said in the Melbourne Magistrates Court that, with a 12-month minimum sentence, Lambert Ariens, 42, would have only four months added to his prison term.

A Commonwealth Games gymnastics bronze medallist was yesterday jailed for 26 months after he pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting and videotaping three girls at a gym two years ago.

Lambert Ariens, 41, of Elsternwick, appeared in the Prahran Magistrates Court charged with nine counts of indecent assault and one count of possessing child pornography. He also faced one count of loitering in a public place while being a known sex offender, but pleaded not guilty to this charge.

The magistrate, Mr Francis Hender, said videos presented to the court showed Ariens had deliberately taped “unwitting young girls” while pulling aside their leotards for his own gratification.

Mr Hender sentenced Ariens to 18 months and seven days for the offences to which he pleaded guilty. He convicted him of the loitering charge and sentenced him to a further five months.

Mr Hender also ordered Ariens to serve a three-month sentence, which was imposed but suspended last year after he was convicted of similar offences. The magistrate did not set a minimum term and ordered the video camera and tapes be forfeited to the police.

During a subsequent application for bail, Detective Sergeant Gary Windhager, of Brighton CIB, told the court Ariens had also been charged with sexually penetrating a four-year-old at Elwood in January.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Senior Constable Jamie Marra, told the court that Ariens, a former gymnastics instructor, videotaped three girls at a Melbourne gym in January 1993.

Senior Constable Marra said footage seized by police showed Ariens pulling aside the girls’ leotards and exposing their genitals while they were standing on their heads. The girls are all believed to be aged about seven.

The tapes also contained images of Ariens fondling the girls, he said.

The court was also told that on 19 January Ariens had videotaped children on an Elwood beach. Senior Constable Marra said most of the images, including children changing into their bathers or showering, were “from the waist down”.

Counsel for Ariens, Mr Andrew McKenna, told the court: “To this day, none of the three child victims are aware that anything untoward happened to them at the gym.”

Mr McKenna urged the magistrate to suspend the sentence, claiming that Ariens would not receive the intensive psychological treatment he required if he was imprisoned.

Ariens won a bronze medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada. Ariens lodged an appeal late yesterday. He was refused bail and is expected to appear at the Melbourne County Court on 5 October.

  1. Victim of Lambert says:

I am a 38 year old victim of this man. I was 10 when he indecently assaulted me. I was also one of the young elite gymnasts under his tuition at the time and was assaulted on the same day that two other girls were. I only wish I could have added time to his initial sentencing. Scumbag!

  2. Victim of Lambert says:

Forgot to mention that we lived in NSW at the time……. I have no doubt that there are more interstate victims who could come forward.

  3. Watcher says:

Ariens worked for Toronto YMCA in the early 80’s. I have no doubt that he was molesting young girls at that time

  4. Watcher says:

His MO was to offer ‘private lessons’ for young girls to unsuspecting parents. I worked at the same centre as Ariens and was concerned after watching the way he ‘padded’ the young girls during classes. I raised concerns with other staff and afterwards made sure that he wasnt left alone with any kids and was supervised as much as possible. He moved to Canberra YMCA

My parents watched the entire class. He told my parents i could go to the Olympics. I too had private lessons. I was 10 years old. This was approx 1987 in Melbourne.

  5. Watcher says:

There will be a lot more victims out there. He was a little grub
