Barker sentenced

04 Jun, 2012 12:00 AM

A MITTAGONG man who formerly owned a Highlands photographic business was sentenced to two years in jail when he appeared at Downing Centre district court on Wednesday, May 30.

Alan David Barker, who operated Fletcher’s Photographics in Mittagong until early last year, was convicted of using a carriage service (computer) to access child pornography and using a carriage service to access child abuse material in relation to offences between November 1, 2005, and July 1, 2010.

He was also convicted of possessing child pornography, a charge related to an offence on July 29, 2010.

Barker’s sentencing was adjourned a number of times before Judge Jeffreys handed down the sentence to the former business man last week.

The 45-year-old was arrested on August 30, 2010, and was charged with the three offences.

The case was prosecuted by the Australian Federal Police and the Department of Public Prosecutions.

Barker closed his photographic business in February, 2011, allegedly telling people his lease had expired and he could not compete with businesses such as Big W, which had come to town.
