Jail for child abductor dubbed every parent’s nightmare

January 18, 2008 01:15pm

A MAN who abducted and sexually abused two girls, and tried to abduct a third child, will be eligible for parole in a little more than four years.

Jamie Bell, 31, was sentenced in the District Court today for committing what a judge described as “every parent’s nightmare”.

Judge Steven Millsteed said crimes such as Bell’s sent a “chill through the community in general”.

“These were not impulsive crimes. They reveal a pattern of behaviour of preying on young girls playing in school grounds or on the street,” he said.

Bell pleaded guilty to two counts of abducting a child under the age of 16, two counts of indecent assault, one of attempted abduction of a child under 16 and one of gross indecency.

He approached the girls, aged eight, nine and 10, in April, August and September, 2005, at Angle Park, Davoren Park and Smithfield Plains.

The court heard that at the time Bell was on bail charged with the rape of a 15-year-old girl.

He was later acquitted of rape but pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse and jailed.

In two of his attacks, Bell approached his victims asking them to help him find his dog.

The first girl he approached was the 10-year-old and managed to entice her into his car.

Bell drove her to a vacant home where he indecently touched her in the yard before letting her go after she started to cry.

Four months later he tried to abduct the nine-year-old girl but she refused to get into his car and walked away.

Three weeks later he abducted the eight-year-old girl after he saw her fall off her bike and encouraged her into his car with the promise to get some tools to fix her bike.

Instead he drove to a reserve where he undressed her, indecently touched her and exposed himself. Bell dropped her off at a church after she started to cry.

Bell was arrested by police who were investigating the report of a man who, the day before the abduction of the third girl, had approached a 14-year-old girl in the street and asked her if she was interested in becoming a model.

The man gave the teenager a mobile phone number which turned out to be Bell’s.

Bell had denied he was the person involved in the abductions and attempted abductions but changed his plea to guilty on the day he was due to face trial.

The court heard that at the time of the offences against the girl’s Bell had been living with his girlfriend.

Judge Millsteed said Bell told a psychiatrist he had an attraction to adolescent girls.

The psychiatrist expressed a view Bell had reasonable prospects of rehabilitation.

Judge Millsteed said he took into account time Bell had already served in custody, jailing him for seven years and three months with a non-parole period of four years and three months.

I worked with this guy. He even came to my house. Everyone used to think there was something weird with him. I remember when the cops came to a work function and took him away. That was for the first “Rape” which he denied. To think that this guy is going to get out is not right.
