Paedophile jailed for six years

Posted August 10, 2007 16:16:00

A Hobart man has been jailed for repeatedly sexually abusing two young girls 30 years ago.

Kerry Tasman Bevis of Mornington pleaded guilty to the offences.

Bevis sexually assaulted one of the girls from when she was aged nine to 12.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said the abuse had ruined her life.

Bevis also admitted assaulting and raping the second girl over a period of nearly four years.

The abuse started when she was eight years old.

In the Hobart Criminal Court, the Chief Justice Peter Underwood described Bevis’ conduct as wicked and said the 63 year old had caused his second victim to suffer depression and anxiety.

The Chief Justice acknowledged Bevis’ guilty plea and his age, but said an adequate punishment was needed.

He sentenced Bevis to six years in jail, with a non-parole period of four-years.

Chance meeting reveals childhood abuse

Posted August 7, 2007 16:00:00

A Mornington man has admitted maintaining a sexual relationship with two children for six years during the 1970s.

63 year old Kerry Tasman Bevis, has pleaded guilty in the Hobart Criminal Court.

The sexual assault of the first girl – aged 9 – began in 1972 and continued for three years.

In 1975, Bevis began raping and assaulting an 11 year old girl once a week for three years.

When the girl asked Bevis why he was assaulting her, he said her father had asked him to do it.

The retired airport firefighter told both girls that no one would believe them if they spoke about the assault.

The women had a chance meeting at a shopping centre in Hobart in September last year and discovered they had both been assaulted by Bevis.

He was charged with the crimes three months later, and is due to be sentenced later this week.
