A “CALLOUS” HIV-positive paedophile, who continued to have sex with a child after he was diagnosed with the virus, will spend at least three-and-a-half years behind bars.

John Bliss, 40, was today sentenced in the District Court after pleading guilty to one count of persistent sexual exploitation of a child during 2005 and 2008.

In sentencing today, Judge Peter Brebner said Bliss met the victim when she was about six or seven, but began the illicit relationship when he was 33 and she was about 13.

The girl ended the relationship when she was 17.

“Your crime is obviously very serious,” Judge Brebner said.

Judge Brebner said Bliss had told the girl about his HIV status.

“Your attitude to the possibility that you might infect her was somewhat callous,” he said.

“Some months after the relationship ended your victim was also diagnosed with HIV.

“It cannot be said that you put her life at risk… however you did not arrange for her to have a blood test.

Judge Brebner said Bliss “exploited” his victim for his own sexual needs.

He sentenced Bliss to six years’ jail, with a non-parole period of three-years and six-months.

Abuse continued after HIV-diagnosis

A paedophile who tested positive to HIV continued to have sex with a 13-year-old girl after finding out about his diagnosis, an Adelaide court has heard.

John Bliss, 40, pleaded guilty to persistent sexual exploitation of a child.

The District Court heard he started sexually abusing the girl in 2005 and continued having sex with her after he was diagnosed with HIV in 2006.

The court heard the victim is now HIV-positive.

Prosecutors said they did not need to provide evidence that Bliss infected her because for sentencing purposes it was enough to prove that he exposed her to the risk.

His defence lawyer said Bliss is remorseful and accepts he needs to be punished for his crime.

Bliss has been in custody since his arrest in 2009 and will be sentenced at a later date.

SA man pleads guilty to child sex charge

April 4, 2011 – 1:54PM

An Adelaide man has pleaded guilty to child sexual exploitation.

John Bliss, 40, appeared in the South Australian District Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to one count of persistent sexual exploitation of a child under the age of 17 in 2009.

A previous charge of endangering life was withdrawn.

Bliss had previously pleaded not guilty to endangering the life of a woman by having unprotected sex with her while he was HIV positive.

The charge said Bliss had unprotected sex with a woman between 2006 and 2009, knowing that the act was likely to endanger her life or that he was recklessly indifferent to the fact.

He is next due in court for sentencing submissions on July 8.

A MAN has admitted repeatedly raping a teenage girl over a three-day period, but denied subjecting a second girl to almost identical torment.

John Bliss, 39, of Adelaide, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

He pleaded guilty to persistently sexually exploiting a girl, 13, over “a period of not less than three days” between September 2005 and December 2008.

He pleaded not guilty, however, to allegations he had persistently sexually exploited a second girl between January and May 2009.

He further denied one count of endangering the life of the first teenager by having unprotected sex with her.

Magistrate Maria Panagiotidis remanded Bliss in custody to stand trial in the District Court next month.
