Youth volunteer gets 200 hours for child sex offence

Gympie Times – 02.06.2007

A FORMER Gympie ambulance officer has been sentenced to 200 hours community service after pleading guilty to possessing erotic stories about teenage boys and performing oral sex on a boy he coached at football.

Kenneth Joseph Boody, 59, had some of the child exploitation material in an office where he worked as a volunteer at the old Gympie railway station. The stories, titled Josh and Story Two, detailed explicit acts between boys aged under 16.

Police also found a similar explicit story between two underage boys, 14 and 10, on the man’s computer hard drive, the court heard. Boody initially told police he used the stories to provide training in his former staff training role with the ambulance service.

He also faced Maroochydore District Court yesterday for indecently dealing with a 15-year-old football player in 1988.

The court heard the boy was staying in a caravan at the rear of the family property and thought of him as a foster father.

The boy woke to find his pants zipper undone and the man performing oral sex; he pretended he was asleep until the man left.

The court heard that Boody, who retired from the ambulance service with post traumatic stress disorder, was heavily involved in the local community.

He was involved with meals on wheels, sporting clubs, charity and community committees, and other community-minded ventures.

Boody was sentenced to 200 hours of community service. No conviction was recorded on the child exploitation material charge, however a conviction was recorded on the indecent dealing offence.

Judge White said, A custodial sentence would be pointless as a deterrent.

Man given community service for porn offences

A Gympie man has been sentenced to 200 hours community service for possessing child pornography and the indecent treatment of a child under 16 years.

Fifty-nine-year-old Kenneth Joseph Boody was the Mary Valley Heritage Railway’s station master when he was charged with possessing pornographic material in August 2005.

Days after a raid on his station office, a man told police he had been sexually assaulted by Boody in 1988, when he was 15 years old.

Today in the Maroochydore District Court Boody pleaded guilty to the possession of child pornography and the indecent treatment of a child under 16 years.

He was sentenced to 200 hours of community service.

In sentencing, the judge told the court a jail sentence was “pointless” as the defendant was unlikely to reoffend.

He also ruled out imprisonment because Boody was in possession of fictional stories, not images which exploited children.
