Men caught with child porn ‘must have privacy’

February 23, 2007 02:00am

NORTHERN Territory men caught with child pornography should have a right to privacy, it was said yesterday.

A convicted pornographer said child protection laws barred newspapers from naming those convicted of possessing child pornography. This is not true.

The law forbids naming an offender only if that would identify the victim.

The man criticised the Northern Territory News for reporting that fellow convicted child pornographer Ron Maxwell Bibby could be appointed secretary of the Darwin RSL sub-branch tomorrow.

“We have a right to privacy,” the other man said.

The man pleaded guilty in 2004 to possessing child porn and was given a suspended sentence.

He said he was on the national sex offenders’ register and had to report his whereabouts to police for eight years. The man said there was a “distinction” between men addicted to child pornography and pedophiles.

“I’m trying my hardest not to re-offend. I’ve been to see a psychiatrist – he’s trying to help me.”

He said he knew some people would like to “string me up”. The man said 99 per cent of jobs were closed to child pornographers because they involved at least some interaction with children.

Mr Bibby, 54, of Darwin, was convicted in 2005 of 35 counts of possessing child pornography.

Magistrate Greg Cavanagh said when sentencing him to four month’s jail, the collection – one of the largest ever seized in the Territory – was “disgusting”.

Some images showed small boys being violated – “with fear on their faces”. Mr Bibby is a life member of the RSL.

Some League members said they were disturbed that he might become Darwin sub-branch secretary.

However, sub-branch president Geoff Carter, said yesterday that Mr Bibby had not been nominated for any of the sub-branch committee positions being contested tomorrow.

A former schoolteacher has been jailed for four months after pleading guilty in the Darwin Magistrates Court to 35 counts of possessing child pornography.

Police found a large collection of videos, images, magazines and novels when they raided 53-year-old Ronald Maxwell Bibby’s Parap home last September.

In sentencing, magistrate Greg Cavenagh said Bibby’s collection was “lewd, lurid, sexually provocative and disgusting”.

He sentenced Bibby to 12 months in jail, which will be suspended after four.

Man pleads guilty to child porn charges

A Darwin man has pleaded guilty to 35 counts of possessing child pornography.

The Magistrates Court has heard that when police raided Ronald Maxwell Bibby’s Parap home in September last year they found a “veritable library” of child pornography.

Prosecutors say the library included almost 4,000 images, documents and movies stored on Bibby’s computer hard drive, and numerous magazines, scrapbooks and paperback books.

Bibby has also pleaded guilty to possessing videos of copied footage and child pornography stories which he wrote himself.
