A MAN caught with 100,000 child pornography images on his computer has escaped going to jail.

Barry Carmody was given a suspended sentence of 20 months in Wollongong Local Court yesterday.

Magistrate Chris McRobert banned him from having the internet connected at home.

He said the need for rehabilitation versus “the shortcomings of the prison system” had to be weighed up.

“Jail is not a pretty place for people with your sort of conviction,” he said.

MORE than 100,000 pornographic images, showing girls as young as seven, were found on a Wollongong tradesman’s computer after it was seized in a police raid.

Police attached to Strike Force Otaki seized Barry Carmody’s computer from his Bank St unit on August 4 as part of an ongoing investigation into child exploitation and pornography.

Carmody appeared in Wollongong Local Court yesterday on one count of possessing child pornography.

The 43-year-old had pleaded guilty to the offence and was due to be sentenced. But Magistrate Chris McRobert adjourned the matter so a further pre-sentence report could be prepared.

Police facts tendered to the court said Australian Federal Police had
identified Carmody’s credit card was being used to access child pornography websites.
