A Northern Territory Police officer has been suspended from duty after being found guilty of possessing child abuse material.

In the Darwin Magistrates Court, 46-year-old Craig Chenhal was handed a two-month sentence, suspended after he serves a week in jail, for possessing 11 images of child abuse material.

Magistrate John Lowndes told the court there was “an expectation that police officers protect the community from the commission of offences, not commission them themselves'”.

Mr Lowndes also told the court that, in sentencing, he would have to consider the fact that Chenhal could lose his job.

Chenhal’s lawyers have lodged an appeal against the sentence and he was released on bail.

Later, he was suspended without from his duties as a police officer.
