Internet predator sentenced to jail

The West Australian May 1, 2009, 3:45 pm

A 24-year old man who tried procure a 12-year-old for sex has been sentenced by the Perth District Court to 15 months imprisonment for each of three charges of attempting to lure a child under the age of 13 for sex and two charges of possession of child pornography.

His terms will run concurrently and he will be eligible for parole after seven and a half months.

The court heard how Matthew William Chandler had chatted three times in December and January with a police officer who pretended to be a 12-year-old boy.

State prosecutor Jerome Rivalland told the Perth District Court that Chandler, who pleaded guilty to the five charges earlier this year, had admitted to police that he was “was on the computer nightly” and was “a person who was prepared to act on his fantasies”.

When Chandler was arrested, police found child pornography images and video files saved on his laptop. Some of the images involved children as young as two-years-old.

In sentencing Chandler, Judge Stephen Scott said he could not consider a suspended term and that in the three times that Chandler had chatted with the officer, the chats had escalated in the degree of sexual conduct, ending in a final request for a meeting.

Mr Scott said the images of child pornography were at the “upper end”.
