THIS man was found with 60,000 pornographic images and videos of children as young as four – yet he walked from court yesterday with a probation order.

Wade Austin Carroll, of Redlynch, faced Cairns District Court, where he pleaded guilty to one count of possessing child exploitation material.

Police found the porn, including images of children being raped, during a raid on his house by Brisbane-based sexual crime investigation unit Taskforce Argos in July last year.

Child safety campaigner Hetty Johnston last night branded Carroll as “sick” and called for tougher sentences for offenders like him.

“Sixty thousand images is a lot of children who have suffered to satisfy that man’s sick, disgusting lust, and we have to recognise that,” Ms Johnston told The Weekend Post.

“Just sending him back home is not going to do anything.

“We have to deal with these things much more seriously.”

During Carroll’s sentence prosecutor Brendan Manttan said the images and video were contained on three external hard-drives. Mr Manttan said the pornography included images of children being raped and were categorised in folders on his computer.

He said Carroll told police he bought the porn on the internet because it was “risque and taboo” but he was not sexually attracted to children.

Defence barrister Jim Henry SC said his client suffered from psychological problems and had an acquired brain injury.

Mr Henry also tendered a psychiatrist’s report that said Carroll did not exhibit “pedophilic tendencies”.

Judge Kerry O’Brien said offences against children such as this would usually lead to a prison term, but he considered Carroll’s psychological problems to be exceptional circumstances.

Judge O’Brien ordered him to complete three years’ probation and made a special condition for ongoing psychiatric treatment. The hard drives and computer were forfeited.
