Judge says child porn a social evil

A South Australian judge has jailed a man for possessing child pornography, saying consumers who download it share responsibility for the crimes of those who make it.

South Australian District Court Judge Peter Brebner on Friday sentenced a 55-year-old man to an 18-month jail term for possessing more than 1600 child porn images and 54 videos.

Darryel (Darryel) Charles Clarke, from Balaklava, north of Adelaide, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated possessing child pornography.

Some of the images found on his computer were of children aged under 14.

Judge Brebner said Clarke had paid to access the material, which only encouraged people involved in the “contemptible trade” of child porn.

“Child pornography is a serious social evil,” he said.

“Those who purchase it must share responsibility for the crimes against the children concerned.”

The judge said Clarke had little insight into the seriousness of his offending but was ashamed of what he had done.

He imposed a non-parole period of five months.
