Gym teacher spared jail

9th June 2012 4:00 AM

AN IPSWICH gym teacher has been handed a suspended prison term for possessing hundreds of child porn images and videos.

Jacob Clark, 35, pleaded guilty to the crimes after the image were discovered by someone he had lent the computer to.

That person uncovered 195 child porn images and 27 videos and handed the computer over to the police.

The images depicted pre-pubescent girls being sexually abused and, on a one-to-five severity scale, police deemed the photos to be Category 4.

Clark, a PCYC trampoline and gym coach, had images on the laptop that were described by Judge Deborah Richards as “abhorrent” and “revolting”.

Despite the prosecution calling for actual jail time, Clark was given 12 months prison, wholly suspended for four years.

Given Clark’s lack of criminal history and 25 counselling sessions undertaken since he was caught, Judge Richards decided not to send him to jail.

Judge Richards gave him credit for seeking counselling on his own and co-operating fully with the police by giving the name of the person who allegedly supplied him with the discs to police.

She also noted Clark’s lifelong career of working with children had now come to and end.

Judge Richards said it was important a message be sent to the community that the courts would not tolerate sexual offending against children.

Clark has the full support of his wife and had multiple family and friends in court to support him yesterday.

Child porn on coach’s computer

AN IPSWICH sports coach has faced court for possessing hundreds of child porn images and videos.

Raceview man Jacob Clark, 35, coached gymnastics and trampolining at the Ipswich PCYC for 18 years before the discovery was made.

Ipswich District Court heard yesterday that Clark had a “semi-breakdown” in January last year and passed his laptop and its case on to someone else.

That person uncovered 195 child porn images and 27 videos and turned the computer in to police.

The images depicted pre-pubescent girls being sexually abused and out of a one to five in severity, police deemed the photos to be a category four.

Clark pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing child exploitation material.

Crown prosecutor Sarah Maleckas said a concerning feature was that Clark held a blue card and worked with children.

Ms Maleckas said viewing innocent children being degraded and exploited created a market for people to keep making such material.

The court heard some of the children in the images and videos were as young as four, and other images depicted children being forced into bondage.

Defence barrister Steve Kissick said Clark had shown significant remorse and had received 25 counselling sessions since being charged with the offence.

Mr Kissick said Clark had the full support of his wife and family and had a real prospect for rehabilitation.

“While he has always worked with young children he no longer can, and there is no suggestion he had ever been inappropriate (to children he taught),” he said.

The court heard that Clark had deleted some of the images before he passed his computer on.

Judge Deborah Richards adjourned the case until tomorrow to consider her sentence.
