A LEOPOLD man found guilty today of possessing child porn was earlier told by his doctor to look at erotica on the Internet.

Laurie Cocking, 68, of Dane Court, Leopold, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday to charges of possessing and producing child pornography.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Geoff Balchin said police searched Cocking’s home and another in Mercer St in April, seizing two computers and 22 DVDs.

He said the items contained 116 images and five movies of naked children, aged from five to 13, engaged in explicit sexual acts with adults and each other.

Sgt Balchin said 56 of the images had been duplicated.

The prosecutor said Cocking first declined to comment, but later told police the images were sent to him by friends, who he refused to name.

“Examination of the computers showed Cocking had accessed the websites himself,” Sgt Balchin said.

Amanda Hurst, for Cocking, said her client realised the seriousness of his offences.

She said Cocking’s general practioner recommended he access adult pornography on the Internet to treat his erectile dysfunction, and a letter from the doctor was presented to the court to support this claim.

“He (Cocking) asked others how he would go about accessing pornography, and the material was sent to him rather than him accessing it,” she said.

Ms Hurst said Cocking had suffered severe anxiety, depression and had become suicidal since being charged.

“He has no prior convictions, has pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and feels a great deal of shame,” she said.

Ms Hurst asked that Cocking not be given an immediate jail sentence.

Despite the defendant’s claim he did not know how to access child pornography, Sgt Balchin pointed out that Cocking had managed to access the websites, download movies and burn 56 images onto a DVD.

“These are not the actions of a person who does not know what he is doing,” Sgt Balchin said.

The prosecutor told the court the possession and production of child pornography had become a silent epidemic, expanding at terrifying speed.

“These images are not stills of children in naked poses,” he said.

“These are moving images of children being raped.

“These children are somewhere in the world – some in Australia.”

Sgt Balchin said victims required protection from the courts, and he called for an immediate jail sentence.

But Magistrate Stephen Myall sentenced Cocking to a suspended, three-month jail term. The defendant was convicted, put on a two-year community-based order and also placed on the national sex offenders register for 15 years.
