A 38-year-old Central Australian man has been sentenced to more than three years’ jail for the sexual abuse of a young girl.

A court in Alice Springs heard the girl was nine years old when Steven Coulthard first sexually assaulted her.

She asked him not to touch her but a year later he did it again.

Coulthard pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual intercourse with a child and one of indecent exposure.

The first two offences took place in a remote Aboriginal community, the third at an Alice Springs camp.

Justice Jenny Blokland said the girl made a victim impact statement saying she is now scared that other men might hurt her.

Coulthard was sentenced to three years and four months’ jail, with a non-parole period of two years and four months.

The court heard he had been drinking at the time of the assaults.

His drinking problems started after his first wife and child died within a short time of each other.

Justice Blokland said the assaults were highly invasive.

She took into account his guilty plea.
