Terry William Crew, convicted of child exploitation, gets a community sentence

A MAN who had more than 200 pornographic images of young girls on his computer has been sentenced to 12 months’ jail but will serve his sentence in the community.

Queensland’s district court chief judge Patsy Wolfe ordered Terry William Crew serve the term while still remaining a member of the community by way of a intensive corrections order (ICO) – allowing him to walk free from court and return home immediately.

Judge Wolfe was told police found 208 images of child exploitation material on Crew’s computer after they seized it on May 7 last year.

Prosecutors said the vast majority of the images where of the same girl, believed to be aged about 14, partially clothed and underwear in provocative poses – including some that showed her “private parts”.

The court was told a number of images showed girls, aged six to 12 years, in “sexualised poses”.

Lawyers for Crew revealed he had significant on-going mental health problems and was undergoing treatment.

Crew pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court to one count of possessing child exploitation material.

Judge Wolfe, in sentencing Crew, said: “It is clear that although the photographs all involve depravity (they) are not in the worst category.”

“Understand this, this (sentence) is imprisonment in the community.”

In Queensland a person placed on an ICO is in effect being handed a jail sentence.

However, an ICO allows the person the freedom to return and live as a normal member of the community, but under strict supervision by the Department of Corrective Services.

A person on an ICO can be subjected to numerous restrictive conditions, which can include curfews, electronic monitoring, be required to do community service work, undergo treatment, courses or counseling, submit to alcohol or drug testing and not commit any further offences.
