Convicted sex offender found in Brisbane

A Victoria sex offender, who fled to Queensland while on parole for offences including the rape of a 13-year-old girl, was arrested in Brisbane yesterday.

Andrew Darling, who breached his parole conditions last month by failing to remain living in Ararat, two hours west of Melbourne, was tracked before he was arrested.

Victoria Police worked closely with Queensland authorities under Operation Rope  a program designed to apprehend convicted sex offenders that breach their bail conditions  a police spokeswoman said.

Information gained from the public via Crime Stoppers in addition to tip-offs from police informants helped authorities track the 39-year-old notorious sex offender, the spokeswoman said.

Darling was released on parole from Port Phillip Prison on May 20 after serving nine years for the sex offences including the rape of the 13-year-old girl.

The spokeswoman could not confirm where Darling was arrested in Brisbane or for how long he had been in south-east Queensland.

Police are hunting a convicted pedophile who is believed to have fled to Melbourne after breaching his parole conditions.

Andrew Darling disappeared from his Ararat home where he was required to live after being released from prison last Wednesday.

He served more than nine years’ jail for a series of serious offences.

Inspector Bernie Rankin, of Crime Task Operations, said Darling was convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl after breaking into a house in 2000.

He said he had served nine years of his sentence but still had five months of his parole period outstanding.

Police say he has left the address and his whereabouts are unknown.

It is believed Darling was in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs earlier this week, and detectives are seeking the public’s help to find him.

“His actions upon his release on his parole have caused us concern, in that he has breached parole conditions within 24 hours of his release,” Inspector Rankin told 3AW.

“We have significant evidence to suggest that he was in the eastern suburbs on May 26,” he said, adding that he appeared to have shown real contempt for the system by his actions.

“Whether he is still a danger is something that I cannot comment on at this stage, but we certainly want him to be reassessed by the Office of Corrections and that is why we are trying to relocate him as soon as possible.”

Darling is described as 176 centimetres tall, of medium build, with blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion.

Investigators want anyone who may come in contact with Darling not to approach him but to contact police on Triple-0.

Anyone with further information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or
