Ex-priest jailed for sex crimes

May 13, 2005 – 10:04PM

A former Anglican priest was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in jail for abusing teenage boys over a 20-year period.

Louis Victor Daniels pleaded guilty to 13 charges of sex-related offences with 10 boys aged between 11 and 17.

The crimes took place in Tasmania from January 1974 until December 1993.

Justice Pierre Slicer said the crimes leading to Daniels’ jail sentence included maintaining a sexual relationship and acts of indecent assault.

Speaking in Hobart’s Criminal Court, Justice Slicer said Daniels, 57, showed a pattern of predation and persisted to abuse boys, despite their resistance.

“He was well aware that his conduct was abhorrent to both the social values and tenets of his religion,” Justice Slicer said.

Daniels, a former deacon and priest, used his position to harass boys, the court was told.

He had already served a 12-month jail sentence in 1999 for sexual misconduct.

The court heard last week that Daniels was abused as a child.

Daniels was extradited from Canberra last year to face charges in Tasmania.

He will be eligible for parole in at least five-and-a-half years.

Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, Reverend John Harrower, said he expressed sadness of Daniels’ actions.

“I want to again apologise to any people who may have been abused by past Tasmanian church leaders,” he said.

Bishop Harrower said the Anglican Church in Tasmania had been working to repair the damage done by a small minority of priests.

“We have been working for a number of years to implement our Safe Ministry program, which checks and accredits all paid church leaders,” he said.

“And any volunteers working with children and young people, and trains them to be aware of abuse issues.”

  1. Lou Daniels legacy says:

I recall contacting the Tasmanian Church just before they moved Lou to Canberra and being scoffed at. I recall trying again after mentally unwell young people fled Canberra and being ignored. I now realise the information I hold and another known to these foul men holds is a liability which neither of us have the courage to share. Louis Daniels wed and buried my family who believed he was kind and caring. Instead, he groomed us all and abused us all. We remain ashamed for his actions and fearful of the consequences of speaking out.
