A TASMANIAN man who pleaded guilty to prostituting a 12-year-old girl in Hobart to more than 120 men has been sentenced to at least eight years in jail.

Gary Devine, 51, of Hobart, on Monday admitted two charges related to organising and supervising the girl’s exploitation.

Supreme Court Justice Peter Evans today sentenced Devine to 10 years’ jail, with a non-parole period of eight years.

A 41-year-old woman has been charged with joining the enterprise that involved advertising the girl in a newspaper as an 18-year-old, who was new in town.

She faces similar charges to Devine and has been remanded in custody to reappear in court next month. She is yet to enter a plea.

Another man, who was one of the 120 men alleged to have had sex with the girl in a Hobart hotel room or at Devine’s northern suburbs unit between August 1 and September 30 last year, is also due in court next month.

He pleaded not guilty after his arrest in October to having sex with the girl, taking a photograph of her performing a sex act and possessing a copy of that photograph, deemed as child pornography offences.

He has been bailed and is due back in court next month.

It’s alleged the woman and Devine profited from prostituting the girl at $100 per half-hour and $50 extra for “no condom” to more than 120 men.

The court in Hobart heard the woman took most of the money, Devine took a smaller cut and the girl used her own share to buy drugs for herself, the woman and Devine.

The girl had been taken in protective custody and suffered a number of sexually transmitted diseases, the court was told.

A TASMANIAN man has admitted prostituting a 12-year-old girl at his home and sharing the proceeds with the girl’s mother.

Gary John Devine, 51, acted as the girl’s pimp last year while she had sex with more than 100 men at his Chapel St unit at Glenorchy, The Mercury reports.

Devine pleaded guilty yesterday to the horrific crimes, which left his victim with potentially devastating sexually transmitted diseases.

The Supreme Court in Hobart heard the girl’s mother took most of the money, Devine took a smaller cut and the girl used her own share to buy drugs for herself, her mother and Devine.

Crown prosecutor Daryl Coates said the horrific prostitution business began last July after the girl’s mother complained to close friend Devine of having no money.

The woman, her daughter and Devine agreed the girl should act as a prostitute.

Devine drew up the newspaper advertisement, which described an 18-year-old “Angela” who was “new in town”.

The woman booked a room at the Midcity Hotel for two nights and Devine acted as the girl’s pimp, charging $100 for half an hour and an extra $50 if the client did not want to wear a condom.

Mr Coates said they made $2000 and the girl gave $100 to Devine, $400 to her mother and spent the rest on drugs for her mother.

Devine then started running his underage prostitution business from his unit, where the girl worked Thursday to Sunday, seeing more than 100 clients.

“He’s procured her to prostitute herself and to have sex not with one person or two persons, but hundreds of people,” Mr Coates said.

After each night Devine took $200 and the mother $400, while the rest was spent on drugs for all three, Mr Coates said.

Police interviewed Devine last November and he has been in custody since.

The girl was examined and diagnosed with STDs including genital warts and chlamydia.

“She’s likely to have serious psychological distress if not problems as a result of this,” Mr Coates told the court.

Accused child pimp pleads not guilty

A man charged with supplying child prostitutes in Hobart has pleaded not guilty to a series of serious sex crimes.

Gary Devine, 50, of Hobart, is charged with procuring a girl aged under 17 years to have unlawful sex with a man at a house in Hobart between August 1 and September 30.

He is also charged with permitting unlawful sex with the girl after inducing her to be at the house for the purpose of having unlawful intercourse with a man.

He is also charged with raping the girl on September 3 and raping a woman on August 9.

Devine on Wednesday entered pleas of not guilty to the charges.

Hobart Magistrate Patrick Dixon remanded Devine in custody to appear in the Supreme Court on February 1.

Two resulting charges, of being the operator of a sexual services business and receiving a fee derived directly from sexual services provided by a child, have been put aside until the other matters are concluded.

Devine was arrested last month as part of a police operation that also netted a man who is now facing charges of having sex with a 12-year-old girl.

That man is also charged with taking and possessing photographs of the girl performing sex acts.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been bailed to appear in the Supreme Court for a committal hearing on February 10.
