A former Baptist minister has been sentenced to a minimum of five-years jail for sexually interfering with young boys in the Philippines.

David John Gillard was working as a missionary in children’s camps in the Philippines when he committed the offences.

The New South Wales Supreme Court heard the 57 year-old interfered with four boys all of whom were under 16 during visits to the country from 1999 to 2001.

Gillard was arrested and deported back to Australia where he pleaded guilty to 12 charges.

Sentencing him to eight-years jail with a non-parole period of five years, Justice David Shillington said he was satisfied Gillard had shown contrition, particularly by his guilty plea.
