A MAN who pleaded guilty to downloading 45,000 child pornography videos and images involving children as young as two has had his jail sentence cut.

Occupational health and safety officer Gregory Bryan Grehan, 30, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court in October 2009 to two counts of knowingly possessing child exploitation material and one count of using the internet to access child pornography.

Grehan admitted to downloading around 45,000 images and 36 videos from the internet between March 2005 and October 2008. He was sentenced to three years and one day on each count, suspended after 18 months, and was given an 18-month non-parole period for the third count.

The Court of Appeal in Brisbane today cut the sentence to two years jail to be suspended after six months.

The court heard Grehan downloaded sexually explicit pictures of children, aged from about two to 17, onto two computers at his parents’ home between March 2005 and October 2008.

He visited more than 200 websites, paying for some of the images.

When discovered by police, Grehan fully cooperated and pleaded guilty to the charges.

His lawyers argued in the Court of Appeal that the sentence was manifestly excessive, saying Grehan had suffered from chronic obsessive compulsive disorder since he was a child and was unable to form normal adult relationships.

In his written judgment, Justice Richard Chesterman said Grehan had a “deep seated and long lasting psychiatric disorder”, which in a large part explained the offending.
