Attacker gets twelve years

AN ICE addict who indecently assaulted two girls, including a five-year-old pupil at an Annandale school, has been jailed until at least 2014.

It will be the first jail term that Gustafoham Harris, 32, of Redfern, has served, despite a long history of drug abuse.

Judge Anthony Blackmore SC said Harris started drinking alcohol and sniffing glue and petrol at age 11 before he started smoking heroin in his mid-teens.

When heroin became too expensive Harris started smoking the amphetamine known as ice, as well as cannabis every day.

Harris has no memories of the assault at Annandale in December 2006 nor an indecent assault on an 11-year-old girl who was walking home from the beach at Clovelly in December 2005.

Judge Blackmore said that victim had suffered “psychological damage” since the attack.

What made the Annandale assault worse, according to Judge Blackmore, was that Harris lured the girl from the school.

He said the girl was kicking a ball with friends when the ball went over a fence.

Harris enticed the girl to climb under the fence and get the ball.

As she was crawling back into the school Harris grabbed her and assaulted her in front of her friends prompting one of the children to yell: “You’ll go to jail”.

Judge Blackmore said he hoped that the two victims would look back on the incidents when they were older and take some comfort in knowing that the attacks were random and the offender was caught and dealt with severely by the court.

As well as the indecent assaults, Harris pleaded guilty to a series of burglaries between 2001 and 2007.

In total, Judge Blackmore sentenced Harris to 12 years’ jail with a non-parole period of seven years and six months.

Harris will be eligible for release in October 2014.

Sex attack in plain view: paedophile jailed

Updated Fri Feb 29, 2008 12:41pm AEDT

A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to seven-and-a-half years’ jail for indecently assaulting two children, one of whom he attacked in plain view of other children.

Gustofohan Harris assaulted the girls, aged 11 and five, in separate incidents in 2005 and 2006.

In the first attack, the 11-year-old girl was grabbed by Harris while walking home from Clovelly Beach in eastern Sydney.

In the second incident, Harris sexually assaulted the five-year-old girl in plain view of other young children as she left her primary school in Annandale to retrieve a lost ball.

The sentencing judge described the second attack as particularly serious because Harris used the lost ball to lure the girl away from the school.

Harris’s sentence included several charges of break-and-enter.

He will be eligible for parole in four-and-a-half years.
