Man used networking website to lure girl, 13

A Redcliffe man used a social networking website to try to lure a 13-year-old girl into having sex with him because he was upset over losing his job, a court has heard.

Matthew Arnold Hansen, 25, pleaded guilty today to one count of using the Internet to procure a child under 16 to engage in a sexual act and one count of possessing child exploitation material.

Brisbane’s District Court heard the man began chatting to the girl on the Bebo website in August last year and communicated with her for three days.

The man also sent her text messages from his mobile phone and tried to arrange a meeting with the child, even offering to drop her home afterwards.

The court heard the child had initially mistaken the man for an Irish pop star. When his messages become more explicit and persistent, the girl notified police.

Investigators raided Hansen’s home and found 71 pornographic images on his computer, featuring children in seductive and sexually explicit poses, the court heard.

Hansen told police he would specifically search for child pornography on file sharing websites and often specified the age of girls he wanted to see.

A psychologist’s report tendered to the court concluded the man had become isolated and despondent after losing his job several months earlier.

“Plenty of people lose their job,” Judge Leanne Clare remarked to the court.

The report also found Hansen was not likely to pursue children for the purpose of sex, but Judge Clare said it was clear he had in this instance.

Hansen was remanded in custody and will be sentenced next Tuesday.
