An Alice Springs man jailed for possessing more than 150,000 images and videos of child abuse has had his prison sentence extended.

Vernon Hancock, 52, was arrested when police found photos, videos and stories depicting child abuse on his computer.

It was one of the largest collections of child pornography in Australian history.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years and four months in jail, suspended after six months.

He was due to be released from jail next week. But the Director of Public Prosecutions appealed against his sentence.

Today in the Supreme Court, Justice Dean Mildren, agreed the sentence was “manifestly inadequate”.

He extended Hancock’s sentence by a year, suspended after 12 months.

That means, taking into account the time he has already spent in jail, Hancock will be released by the middle of next year.

And so it starts again. I was an NT copper (retired) and was one of the two investigators who investigated Hancock’s first offence. He had 160,000 images over 5000 of which were of the worst category, 4000 videos, 500 pages of chatroom logs. I personally categorised 50,000 images, 4000 videos and 500 pages of chat log. This took nearly 2 months working 8 hours a day 5 days a week. As time went on during the categorisation I would feel ill at the start of the day before I turned the computer on to start categorisation and by the end I felt that I should have been listed as a victim in the case. Even after the appeal his sentencing was still inadequate, given his level of offending the sentencing requirements were for 5 years to serve but for some reason the courts are soft on child porn offenders.

Hancock used to run a mobile kids playground in Adelaide in the late nineties. He was also instrumental in starting a father son camp trips. I know this because I have known and trusted him with my children and i am godfather to his daughter. Just goes to show you never really know your best friends, hope you rot in Gail vernon
