AN Adelaide man has been jailed for an “extremely serious and abhorrent” child pornography haul.

William John Hawkins, 62, of Paralowie was arrested in May 2008 for having 250 videos and 107,000 images on his computer – 95 per cent of which depicted “particularly abhorrent” child pornography.

In sentencing today, Judge David Lovell, said Hawkins had collected and stored those “extremely serious” images – which depicted an estimated 4000 different children – over 12 months in an elaborate system of folders.

The images depicted ranged from suggestive poses to sadism.

He said each of those children would have experienced “severe physical and psychological trauma”.

“Those who are part of the market for child pronography must share responsibility for the abuse inflicted on these children.

“Everyone who accesses child pornography gives a reason for and in a sense encourages the abuse of children.”

Judge Lovell said children must be protected from sexual predators.

He said in some cases Hawkins had downloaded the images from pay sites – supporting the markets which “perpetrate this hideous abuse”.

He said Hawkins had little insight into his offending.

“The explicit nature of the child pronography didn’t bother you… it was just like watching adult pornography.”

Hawkins stood hunched, shaking and tearful as Judge Lovell ordered he serve a total two years and two months in prison with a non-parole period of 12 months.

A 61-year-old man from northern Adelaide who was charged in connection to an international paedophile ring has pleaded not guilty in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court.

Paralowie man William John Hawkins was arrested in May last year for possessing child pornography on his computer.

The nationally co-ordinated raids were part of Operation Centurion, where police seized more than one million images of child pornography accessed from a global website.

Police say the website featured children ranging in age from babies to 18 year olds.

Hawkins has been committed to stand trial in the District Court next month.
