A FORMER Brighton Grammar teacher suffering a mid-life crisis has escaped jail despite being guilty of downloading child porn.

John Newton Hewitt ,49, was caught in December when Austrian police alerted Australian authorities about pornography downloads.

Hewitt, a father of three, this week pleaded guilty in the County Court to using the internet to access child pornography and possessing child pornography.

Hewitt, who taught history and politics at Brighton Grammar, was due to start teaching at prestigious Scotch College when he was arrested, the court heard.

Today he was sentenced to 18 months jail, but was released on a two-year order to be ”of good behaviour” after he pays $10,000.

A second state offence of possessing child pornography saw him receive a 12 month suspended sentence.

Hewitt must must also be supervised by a psychologist for the next 12 months and must pay $6000 to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

He will be registered as a sex offender for the next 15 years.

Judge Frank Gucciardo said he had reviewed the images and found them “distasteful and frankly disturbing”.

“They are disgusting, offensive and can only be described as evil,” he said.

Hewitt has co-authored a book with former premier John Cain and also lectured in political science at Melbourne University.

Earlier, the court heard Hewitt, from Knoxfield, had 155 explicit videos and 266 images depicting child pornography on a notebook computer.

He also had a large collection of files burned on to CDs and stored in a cardboard box.

The images showed children aged four to 17 engaging in sex acts with adult males, young girls stripping naked and pictures of children’s genitals.

Hewitt used search terms such as “naked little girls” and “illegal pre-teen pics” to search for the free images between July 2006 and December 2007.

Hewitt had been downloading pornography for three years and had installed software to delete the history of websites visited, the court heard.

Psychologist Patrick Newton said the teacher was obsessed with pornography and turned to child porn due to a mid-life crisis and the stress of his wife leaving him.

Since his arrest Hewitt’s wife has divorced him and he has not had access to his three young sons.

In an earlier interview with police, Hewitt said he looked at the images out of curiosity and titillation.
“For me it was a shameful thing that I wanted to keep hidden,” he said.

Defence lawyer John Dickinson said Hewitt’s former high standing in the community had made his downfall all the greater.

“One doubts he will ever regain that reputation,” Mr Dickinson said.

Brighton Grammar chaplain Brian Porter gave evidence that Hewitt had lost just about everything.
The Victorian Institute of Teaching said Hewitt was no longer registered as a teacher.

Judge Frank Gucciardo said the fact Hewitt had worked around adolescent boys at the time of the offences was very disconcerting.
