Murdering paedophile jailed for life

September 28, 2006 – 1:04PM

A Sydney paedophile who murdered a man before raping his young stepdaughter will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The NSW Supreme Court had jailed Jeffrey John Hillsley for 30 years for murdering a friend and then kidnapping and raping the man’s 10-year-old stepdaughter.

But the Court of Criminal Appeal has found the murder was so wicked, anything less than a life sentence would be inadequate.

Hillsley had previously served jail time for sex offences against three young girls.

He had been out of jail for less than two years when he bludgeoned his friend to death with a hammer at the man’s Campsie home in 2003.

Over Christmas that year, Hillsley had stayed with the victim, who cannot be named, and returned to attack the 54-year-old as he slept on New Year’s Eve.

He had sexually assaulted the man’s stepdaughter during his earlier stay and, after the murder, abducted her at knifepoint and repeatedly raped her.

The girl managed to escape 16 hours later.

Hillsley, 54, pleaded guilty to murder, kidnap and four counts of aggravated sexual assault.

The case prompted calls from the NSW opposition for the “chemical castration” of offenders like him, and the crown appealed against the inadequacy of his minimum 25-year jail term.

Appeal judges Michael Adams, David Hodgson and Peter Johnson upheld the appeal, imposing a life sentence, never to be released, for the murder.

It was a “vicious attack of extreme violence” which demonstrated his danger “as a murderer, not merely as a paedophile”, they said.

The community needed protection from this “extremely dangerous man”.

Hillsley told police he planned to attack his friend because he owed him money and intended to sexually assault the girl as “further payback”, knowing it would “really piss him off”.

The sentencing judge, Peter Hidden, found that Hillsley’s desire to exact revenge on the man by abducting and sexually assaulting his stepdaughter did not contribute to the gravity of the murder.

But the Court of Criminal Appeal disagreed, saying “the sexual assaults were inextricably linked with the murder, rendering the latter more heinous than otherwise”.

Hillsley’s crimes were “a single act of terrible revenge” and helped place the murder in the worst class, they said.

Although the appeal judges found the sexual assault sentences were lenient in light of the need to deter Hillsley, they did not increase them because of the life sentence they imposed.

“There are some crimes which are so wicked that a sentence less than a life sentence cannot adequately reflect the community interest in retribution and punishment,” they said.

“In our view, this murder is a crime of this kind.”

Sydney man pleads guilty to rape, murder

A Sydney man will face a sentencing hearing in October after pleading guilty to the repeated rape of a 10-year-old girl and the murder of her step-father.

Jeffrey John Hillsley sexually assaulted the girl at her family’s home in south-western Sydney in December of last year, before returning to the Campsie home on New Years Eve and killing her step-father.

The Chippendale man then took the girl to different locations in Campsie and Chullora, where he sexually assaulted her again.

Hillsley pleaded guilty to six charges at an arraignment hearing in the Supreme Court today and will face a sentencing hearing next month.

It’s 2015 and I only just came across this story in relation to news on someone named Spedding who may be connected with the recent disappearance of the little Tyrell child.
I am just astonished at the appalling sentences handed down for this fellow’s crimes and note that at his trial, the judge even said that he considered him capable of rehabilitation. Yet, during his previous period of incarceration for child rape, he had even sent a cheeky letter to authorities to notify the community that he would be back and he also said in it, “Thank God for little girls.”. They still let him out on parole and within a year he has murdered and committed multiple rape on the victim’s step child. This bloke had a history of sex attacks against little kiddies aged between 5 and 9 or 10; then a murder and multiple rapes against another girl of 10 – and the deranged judge still deems him worth rehabilitating. I know that many members of the public, like me, are dumbfounded by ‘justice’ outcomes for child sex offenders. At the very least, I would like news reports to carry links to detailed reports that explain WHY judges make certain decisions. Maybe then I’ll understand better and not just be left full of despair and frustration.
