Corio grandfather jailed for indecent acts on young girl

June 29th, 2010

A 78-YEAR-OLD Corio grandfather was yesterday jailed for six years for indecent acts on a young girl taken to him for massages.

Leonard Hobbs fronted Geelong County Court earlier this year on 14 counts of indecent acts on a child under 16, two counts of sex penetration of a child under 16 and four counts of attempted sexual penetration of a child under 16.

Hobbs pleaded not guilty but a jury found otherwise.

At a hearing in October last year, the victim’s mother said the massages took place in Hobbs’ garage on a massage table when the victim was aged from six to 13.

The woman, who cannot be named, said her daughter would come home after the massages and say that she hated Hobbs but would not reveal why.

She said it was not until 2007, about four years after the incidents stopped, that the victim told her boyfriend about what happened and he informed her mother.

The mother said she and the daughter’s boyfriend confronted Hobbs at his home about the allegations.

They told him they no longer wanted anything to do with him.

Hobbs’ reaction was to call his wife into the room and make out the pair was “crazy”, she said.

Yesterday Judge Gerard Mullaly sentenced Hobbs to a total of six years jail with a non-parole period of 3 years and six months.

Hobbs will be almost 82 when released.

Corio grandpa faces trial over rape

Aleks Devic

October 31st, 2009

A 77-YEAR-OLD grandfather will stand trial for allegedly performing sex acts on his young female victim, who was taken to him for massages.

Corio’s Leonard Hobbs pleaded not guilty to 24 charges relating to the allegedly sexually assault and rape of the victim while she was aged between six and 13.

The victim’s mother told the Geelong Magistrates’ Court her daughter, now aged 21, who cannot be named, said the massages took place in a garage at the accused’s home and on a massage table.

She said when she arrived to pick up her daughter, the door was always locked.

“I would knock on the door and he would say ‘wait I’m busy’,” the mother said.

She said her daughter would come home after the massages and say that she “hated” Mr Hobbs but would not reveal why.

The court was told the victim told her boyfriend in 2007, about four years after the alleged incidents stopped, about what happened and he informed her mother.

The mother said she and her daughter’s boyfriend confronted the defendant at his home where they told him about the allegations and they no longer wanted anything to do with him.

She said Mr Hobbs then called his wife into the room and made out the pair was “crazy”.

Detective Senior Constable Nick Uebergang said when the defendant was interviewed, he did not appear to be distressed or shocked by the allegations.

He said police executed a search warrant at the man’s home seizing several items including DVDs and CDs.

“There was no child pornography located on those items,” Sen Constable Uebergang said.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan said there was sufficient evidence to send Mr Hobbs to trial in the County Court.

Mr Hobbs’ charges include rape, sexual penetration of a child and indecent assault.

Mr Hobbs had his bail extended with conditions he remain at his Corio home.
