A PROMINENT magician and children’s entertainer is facing more than 10 years in jail when he sentenced in Ipswich today for sexually abusing four girls aged between six and 15 and videotaping himself having sex with a would-be teenage assistant.

Franky Houdini, a popular Ipswich magician, escapologist and entertainer, is scheduled to appear in the Ipswich District Court in Queensland this morning for sentence on numerous sexual offences committed in 2007 and 2008, The Courier-Mailsaid.

Houdini, 36, whose original name was Frank Kunde, pleaded guilty in April to six counts of indecent treatment of a child – four against a six-year-old girl and two committed on a 15-year-old.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation material, understood to contain video footage of another 15-year-old girl in stages of undress.

The entertainer, who legally changed his name to Franky Houdini several years ago, was also convicted by an Ipswich jury of maintaining a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl and making a pornographic film of himself having sex with her.

The jury, which took less than an hour to convict Houdini, heard he told investigators at the time he believed the girl was 16.

The court was told Houdini met the girl at North Ipswich’s Riverlink Shopping Centre in 2008.

He bought her adult toys and exotic attire, and photographed her in provocative poses.

The Crown said the performer also took the girl to a hotel and videotaped them having sex, and later told her of his plans to sell the sex tape and share the proceeds.

Prosecutors this week told Judge Deborah Richards one of the offences on the six-year-old girl was committed while Houdini was dressed in his magician’s attire.

Houdini regularly made the headlines in the 1990s and early this decade for a string of daring stunts, including jumping handcuffed, chained and shackled from Indooroopilly Bridge into the Brisbane River in 2001.

Police had to intervene to stop him from being lowered into a flooded Bremer River in 1996 after a failed earlier attempt.

Houdini, who has been in custody since July 2008, is scheduled to be sentenced by resident Ipswich judge Deborah Richards this morning.

No escape from child sex crime

A MAGICIAN and children’s entertainer who this week pleaded guilty to child sex offences was performing in Central Queensland around the same time he committed the crimes.

Franky Houdini, 36, based in Ipswich, was the main entertainer at the Mount Larcom Show in 2007.

Although there are no complaints from the CQ area, Houdini admitted to a number of crimes with children as young as six on dates between 2006 and 2008 in Ipswich and Brisbane.

Yesterday Mt Larcom Show president Craig Butler was shocked to hear about Houdini’s criminal behaviour.

“He was at the show in 2007 and it was very well received. He did a good job for us entertainment-wise and many people liked the show,” he said. “There certainly have been no complaints from anyone at our show.”

Mr Butler said the show committee also tried to book Houdini in 2008, but he was unavailable.

Mr Butler said in planning this year’s show he would definitely not bring the magician back under the current circumstances.

Houdini this week pleaded guilty to indecent treatment of two girls aged six and 15 and possessing child exploitation material relating to another 15-year-old girl.

He will be sentenced for these offences at a later date and is facing a jail term.

Earlier this year, Houdini was found guilty by a jury of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl and making a pornographic film with her.

An Ipswich court heard Houdini met the girl at a shopping centre in mid 2008 and asked her if she was interested in promotional work.

He was said to have taken pictures of her undressing before filming them having sex.

Magician admits more sex offences

Felicity Caldwell | 28th April 2010

AN IPSWICH magician and children’s entertainer is facing jail after admitting sex offences against three more underage girls.

The guilty plea comes just weeks after a jury found Franky Houdini, 36, guilty of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl and making a pornographic film with her.

The well-known magician, comedian and escape artist had denied those charges, claiming he believed the girl was at least 16 at the time.

But yesterday Houdini pleaded guilty in Ipswich District Court to the indecent treatment of two girls aged six and 15 and a further charge of possessing child exploitation material relating to another 15-year-old girl.

The details of the cases were not revealed in court yesterday. Houdini will be sentenced for these offences at a later date.

However, The Queensland Times can reveal the six-year-old’s mother pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12 earlier this year after she let Houdini sexually assault her daughter.

The woman, who cannot be named, picked up her daughter from school in 2006 and said she had a “surprise at home”.

Prosecutor Sal Vasta told the court that when they arrived home Houdini – dressed in his magician’s outfit – leapt out and said “boo!” before they watched a pornographic movie.

The group took off their clothes and Houdini kissed the young girl on the mouth and lay on top of her.

Mr Vasta said Houdini asked the woman if she had a problem with what he was doing and she replied “no”, but soon after ordered her daughter to leave the room.

The woman, who wept in court, told police she had no memory of the incident but pleaded guilty on the basis of her daughter’s evidence.

The woman, who had no criminal history, was given a 12-month suspended jail term.

Defence barrister Peter Sloane said the woman could recall little about the incident and was “shattered” she allowed it to occur.
