Cadet leader jailed for sex abuse

Updated September 15, 2011 16:20:13

A paedophile who ran a volunteer cadet course has been jailed for sexually abusing an intellectually disabled girl.

Ian Frederick McLeod, 62, was found guilty of persistent sexual exploitation of a child.

He stood trial in the Adelaide District Court on charges of sexually abusing two disabled girls and was found guilty of crimes against one of the girls, who was 12 at the time of the offences.

The court heard McLeod ran a quasi-naval cadet program not directly associated with the Navy or other Defence forces and took advantage of his vulnerable victim after she enrolled in the course.

Judge Peter Herriman said the protection of children was a paramount consideration in his decision against suspending McLeod’s three-and-a-half-year jail sentence.

A non-parole term of one year and nine months was set.

A man who ran a navy cadet program has been found guilty of sexually abusing a girl he was tutoring.

Ian Frederick McLeod, 62, was accused of abusing two girls as young as 12, between January 2007 and December 2009 after they got involved in a volunteer cadet program in Adelaide.

The program was not directly associated with the defence forces but often was referred to by its members as the sea scouts.

Both victims were intellectually disabled but gave trial evidence about their abuse.

McLeod argued the girls’ evidence was unreliable and inconsistent.

But Judge Peter Herriman was satisfied the offending was proved against at least one of the girls and found McLeod guilty of persistent sexual exploitation of a child.

There will be sentencing submissions next month.
