Convicted paedophile Mader gets more gaol

Published: 3:53 pm, Thursday, 29 January 2015

A Perth man who has already been jailed three times for sexually abusing teenage boys has been sentenced to two more years.

Neville Ross Mader pleaded guilty in the District Court of Western Australia last month to five charges including indecent assault, sexual penetration without consent and indecent dealing.

The offences were committed against boys aged 15 between 1990 and 1997.

Mader was previously convicted in 1998, 2001 and 2008 for similar offences, serving seven years behind bars from a total sentence of nine-and-a-half years.

He was not granted parole but received an automatic one-third off his sentences for good behaviour, a discount that no longer exists in WA.

The five charges for which he was convicted on Thursday, involving three complainants, occurred in the same time frame as the previous offences.

In one incident in 1991, Mader plied a boy with alcohol and watched pornography with him before abusing the teenager.

After hearing submissions, Judge Allan Fenbury said Mader had preyed on vulnerable youths who had turned to him for sanctuary.

He had breached their trust appallingly, Judge Fenbury said.

The judge said Mader had showed remorse and contrition, but that did not appear ‘fulsome’.

He noted a pre-sentence report had some disconcerting observations, namely Mader’s distorted view of how vulnerable his victims had been and the impact of his actions on them.

Mader had recognised his offending had affected the boys, but also said they had taken ‘an awful long time’ to complain about it.

‘You blame the victims a bit,’ Judge Fenbury said.

He said that if the five counts had been before the previous judges, there was no doubt Mader would have served about 11-12 years.

Mader will be eligible for parole.

Pedophile lured street kid onto yacht

April 04, 2008 05:15pm

A PERTH man has been jailed for plying a vulnerable homeless teenager with alcohol and sexually abusing him on a yacht.

Neville Ross Mader, 56, was today sentenced to two years’ jail after pleading guilty to two counts of procuring a 15-year-old boy to engage in sexual behaviour and one count of sexual penetration of the boy.

Western Australian District court judge Peter Martino said Mader took his victim and another teenager to a yacht moored at Fremantle late in 1992 or early 1993.

The victim was often homeless at the time and had many problems, Judge Martino said.

“He was a vulnerable person,” he said.

During the night and the next morning, Mader gave the teenager alcohol and performed oral sex on him twice, while the teenager performed oral sex on him once.

“These are serious offences and have had a serious adverse impact on the life of the victim,” Judge Martino said.

Given the psychological impact of the assault, he said, it was understandable the victim had waited so long to come forward with his complaint.

Mader had entered an early guilty plea but had not shown any remorse, the court was told.

Eligible for parole, he could be freed in 12 months.
