Former Queensland police officer David Warren Moore, 55, has received a wholly suspended jail sentence to possessing child exploitation material.

After spending the night in custody, Moore walked from the Brisbane District Court a free man after Judge Leanne Clare ordered a 15-month jail term be suspended immediately.

Moore sobbed loudly as Judge Clare told the court the 55-year-old had paid a high price for his offending.

Judge Clare said recent publicity had gone beyond public humiliation and did not accurately reflect Moore’s offending behaviour.

In 1987, Moore was jailed for two-and-a-half-years after engaging in sodomy with a 16-year-old boy.

His four children only found out about his past history of child sex offences through publicity of this most recent case.

Moore, who was commonly known to commercial TV viewers in the 1980s as ‘Officer Dave’, pleaded guilty yesterday to possessing a VHS recording featuring naked boys aged 12 to 15, one of whom is shown performing a sex act.

Prosecutor Jacob Robson told the court yesterday police executed a search warrant on Moore’s Aspley video production business in May last year.

The court heard the images are believed to date back to the 1970s.

Leon Ackermann, who represented Moore, told the court yesterday any jail time would be more onerous for his client.

‘Proper scrutiny’

Queensland Attorney-General Cameron Dick says he has no concern about the media coverage of the case.

He says reporters are entitled to do their job.

“Every Queenslander is entitled to go into an open Queensland court and see justice being delivered, and so too can the media,” he said.

“The media can report on any case in any Queensland court.

“I have no concerns about the coverage of this case – it’s important in a democracy that our courts receive proper scrutiny and i have no concern about the coverage of this case.”

Deputy Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg says no-one should be tried by the media, but the main issue is the sentencing.

“There is always a public interest particularly in cases like this, and I suppose there is an argument that sometimes that can go a little bit too far,” he said.

“Having said that I think the principal consideration for any sentencing judge has to be ‘does the punishment fit the crime and is the community going to be protected by the sentence?'”

Former Queensland police officer and convicted paedophile David Warren Moore, 55, has pleaded guilty in the District Court in Brisbane to possessing child exploitation material.

Prosecutor Jacob Robson told the court police executed a search warrant on Moore’s Aspley video production business in May last year.

During the search, they found a video cassette with images of naked boys aged 12 to 15.

The cassette also depicts one boy performing a sex act.

The court heard the images are believed to date back to the 1970’s.

Leon Ackermann who is representing Moore said his client was a former police officer who had appeared on commercial television children’s shows.

He said any jail time would be more onerous for Moore.

Judge Leanne Clare adjourned his sentencing to tomorrow.
