‘Riddled with guilt’ over sex with girl

A MELBOURNE businessman, with links to the Liberian Government, videotaped himself having sex with a girl overseas, a court was told yesterday.

Nicholas Alexander Oman pleaded guilty in the County Court yesterday to two Commonwealth child sex charges in Africa and Asia between October 1999 and December 2001.

Commonwealth prosecutor John Champion, SC, said Oman had claimed the girl lied about the events and when he was notified of the existence of the tape by the girl’s mother, Oman said the child “came on to him”.

Oman pleaded guilty to one act of indecency and one count of sexual intercourse, both with a child under the age of 16. The girl was aged between five and seven at the time of the offences.

The court heard Oman was arrested by Australian Federal Police agents in 2002, denying the allegations but admitting it was him in the video. While Oman was charged under the 1994 child sex tourism amendment to the Commonwealth Crimes Act 1914, his lawyer, Julie Sutherland, said it was not her client’s sole purpose for travelling overseas. Oman had travelled to Liberia in 1999 for business reasons, including the development of an iron ore plant.

Oman, who was born in Slovenia, possessed a Liberian diplomatic passport as he worked for the government as a consultant. Forensic psychologist Jeffrey Cummins said that Oman’s offending was opportunistic and isolated.

“He’s very ashamed of his offending behaviour … riddled with guilt and remorse,” he said, adding Oman would be diagnosed as a pedophile.

Judge Nixon remanded Oman, 63, of Mordialloc, in custody until sentencing at a later date.

Oman will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
