West Australian man jailed for raping baby

Posted 31 July 2002, 20:26 AEST

In Australia, a man has been sentenced to 18 years jail for raping an eight-month old baby girl.

The offence took place in the West Australian city of Perth.

As Karen McPherson reports the girl is likely to have permanent injuries.

The court heard 26 year old Charles Malcolm Punch took the baby to a vacant block at North Perth and assaulted her in February last year.

When police found them, he told officers he had been changing her nappy.

Outside the court prosecutor Patti Chong said the rape has had a catastrophic affect on the child.

“She will continue to receive medical treatment for a very long long time,” she says.

The court heard Punch has brain damage, is an alcoholic, and lacks the ability to control his behaviour.

He will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years in jail.

Concidering this very sick and perverted form of a human being has been found to have brain damage and alcohol issues and has a problem being able to control what he does, he should never be alowed to be released as this type of person has very little chance of being rehabilitated and the fact that this very little baby has had this done to her and has recieved long term health problems is more of a reason that this man should be left in prison, this child has a life term sentence for something she didnt ask for
