A PHOTOGRAPHER secretly videotaped young child models in a bid to protect him from possible child sex abuse allegations, a court has been told.

The Ipswich District Court was told David Patrick Reid, 23, recruited a girl, 16, and her brother, 14, for a photographic shoot at the Laidley Cultural Centre, 85km southwest of Brisbane.

Prosecutor Ron Swanwick said Reid made contact with the children after advertising for child models to be photographed for a calendar he intended to produce.

He said Reid paid the children for the photo shoot and asked them to change separately inside a room at the cultural centre on May 1 last year.

The court was told that while the teenage boy was changing, he noticed a network of electrical wires that led to a nearby toilet cubicle.

Mr Swanwick said when the boy walked into the cubicle he found a television and videotape player that was recording a live feed from a camera secretly hidden in a change room.

The court was told police were soon called in and that Reid claimed he was taping the children to protect himself from any allegations of child abuse.

However, Mr Swanwick said that during a search of Reid’s home police found more than 30 provocative images of children.

Reid pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent treatment of a child and one of possessing child exploitation material.

The court was also told he contacted the parents and informed them of his plan to photograph their children.

Judge Deborah Richards sentenced Reid to 12 month’s jail, but ordered him be released on immediate parole.
