A Melbourne man who raped an 86-year-old woman and an intellectually disabled woman has been sentenced

to at least 11 years in jail.

John Edward Szabo, 36, of Mooroolbark, pleaded guilty to 10 charges including counts of rape and indecency

in front of a child.

Victorian County Court Judge Elizabeth Gaynor said Szabo’s “unusual frankness” and co-operation with police,

and his guilty plea at the earliest possible time, indicated genuine remorse.

She said the crimes occurred at times of high personal stress, including during his father’s terminal illness, a

break-up the day after his father’s funeral and immediately after a second break-up.

“Your reactions to those stressors, stressors that are not out of the range of those experienced by other people

in the community, are so extreme, so out of proportion that, frankly, I regard you as dangerous,” Judge Gaynor

said on Tuesday.

“All of your victims were particularly vulnerable.”

Judge Gaynor sentenced Szabo to 14 years’ jail with a non-parole period of 11 years, and ordered that he be listed

on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Earlier, defence lawyer Helen Spowart told a pre-sentence hearing that Szabo had a high libido and used sex

as a form of coping.

Prosecutor Anne Hassan said Szabo had harassed a number of women, before offering a ride to his first victim,

a dementia sufferer aged 86.

He drove her around for an hour, threatened and assaulted her, before taking her to an industrial area where

he raped her, then drove off.

Another victim, who has a mild intellectual and physical disability said she had lost her freedom after being

raped by Szabo.

“I get scared, I can’t go out so I just stay at home,” she said.
