A TEACHER who had sex with a female student in his school’s photographic darkroom has been sent to jail for five years.

Paul Anthony Segar, 50, will spend at least three years behind bars after Judge Julian Leckie, in the Victorian County Court, sentenced him to a maximum of five years today.

Judge Leckie described Segar’s sex attack as a serious breach of trust.

Victim impact statements revealed the effect the ordeal had on the victim and her family.

Segar was 35 when he began molesting the girl in 1992 at a Melbourne secondary college.

The abuse went on for three years.

A jury earlier found Segar guilty of two counts of performing an indecent act with a child, two counts of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and four counts of sexual penetration of a child aged 16 or 17.

Segar’s crimes came to light in 1996 when the student confided in another teacher but Segar resigned and the matter was taken no further, the court was told.

Judge Julian Leckie said Segar was not remorseful for his actions.

“These are without doubt serious offences.”
