A former teacher at a boarding school in central western New South Wales has been jailed for up to eight years for sexually assaulting students.

Former housemaster and teacher Raymond John Woods was convicted of 21 offences he committed at The Scots School in Bathurst between 1983 and 1989.

They include sexually and indecently assaulting five boys and gross indecency offences.

In sentencing him to eight years in jail with a non-parole period of four years, Judge Robert Toner told Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court that Woods groomed his victims in a deliberate and calculated way.

Judge Toner told the court Woods targeted vulnerable children at the private college.

“In each of these cases the conduct of the offender was deliberate,” he said.

Judge Toner noted that Woods is now 67 and will be significantly older when he gets of of jail.

“I have little doubt he will he held in protective custody,” he said.

Woods sat in the dock crying before he was led away by court officers.

He will be eligible for parole in May 2018.
