Stefan Neil Thomas Wakeman jailed for violent assault at Cardiff store

By Gabriel Wingate-Pearse

Oct. 22, 2014, 10 p.m.

A YOUNG woman behind the counter of a Cardiff convenience store thought she was being kidnapped when she was dragged out of the shop by her hair by a 51-year-old man.

Stefan Neil Thomas Wakeman entered the store and bought a litre of milk before asking where the coffee was kept at about 4pm on a Saturday in April.

When the woman took him to the appropriate shelf he took out a wrench and bashed her over the head with it.

He put his hand over her mouth and told her to shut up before dragging her towards the front of the store, Newcastle Local Court heard on Wednesday.

Wakeman, who has spent more than 18 years of his adult life behind bars, pleaded guilty to the crime just before it went to a hearing.

He has been in custody since his arrest the day after the attack on April 19.

Magistrate Robert Stone described the assault as very violent.

‘‘You could only imagine the significant amount of fear that she (the victim) would have felt as a result of this incident,’’ Magistrate Stone said.

It was agreed that there was a certain amount of planning involved given that Wakeman entered the store armed with a wrench or spanner, the court heard.

He initially denied the charges saying the woman spat at him but CCTV footage was found to be ‘‘entirely inconsistent’’ with his version of events.

Wakeman has spent more time in jail than out of jail during the 28 years since June, 1986.

He was jailed in 2003 for nine years for raping a 14-year-old girl at Broadmeadow.

With a non-parole period of one year and eight months he will be eligible for release on parole on December 19, 2015.

Slap on the wrist for act of indecency on teens

13 Nov 11 @ 10:07am by Staff Writer

A FORMER northern beaches musician with distinctive facial tattoos has been given a good behaviour bond for 18 months after he pleaded guilty to sex crimes committed in 2008.

Josiah El Joash, 48, was arrested in December 2008 after police raided his Dee Why premises in response to complaints he had indecently assaulted a 16-year-old girl who went to his business to have her lip pierced and had incited a 13-year-old girl to perform a sex act on him. El Joash was charged with committing an act of indecency and of inciting a person under 16 to commit an act of indecency.

El Joash failed to appear in court in early January 2009 and was found guilty in his absence, after which warrants for his arrest were issued. Last month El Joash was arrested in Victoria by an off-duty police officer.

He was extradited to Sydney and remanded to appear in Central Local Court on Thursday, where he pleaded guilty.

Missing pervert returns

A FORMER northern beaches musician with distinctive facial tattoos has been extradited from Victoria to face sentencing after being found guilty in absentia of sex crimes.

Josiah El Joash was arrested in December 2008 after police raided his Dee Why home and seized a computer containing 1423 images of child sex abuse.

The raid was in response to complaints that El Joash had indecently assaulted a 16-year-old girl who went to his business to have her lip pierced and that he had incited a 13-year-old girl to perform a sex act on him.

El Joash was charged with committing an act of indecency and of inciting a person under 16 to commit an act of indecency.

The crime manager of northern beaches police, Inspector Craig Wonders, said El Joash, now 48, failed to appear in court in early January 2009 and was found guilty in his absence, after which warrants for his arrest was issued.

On Tuesday northern beaches detectives travelled to Victoria, where El Joash had been arrested at Apollo Bay after being recognised by an off-duty police officer.

In Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday, northern beaches Detective Senior Constable Darren Cairns said he had two warrants for the arrest of El Joash – one for the indecent assault on a child and one for inciting a person under 16 to commit an act of indecency.

The court heard that El Joash was also the subject of investigations into child pornography and fraud.

The court was told that El Joash’s business partner had reported him missing in 2009 and had said that El Joash had twice tried to commit suicide before disappearing into bushland.

It is understood El Joash was last seen in Newcastle on January 11, 2009, when he told friends he was going into bushland in the Newcastle suburb of Cameron Park to meditate.

The court in Geelong heard that when El Joash was arrested at Apollo Bay, he was wearing makeup to cover his facial tattoos and had grown his hair long.

El Joash was extradited on Thursday and appeared in Central Local Court, where the matter was adjourned to November 10. He remains in custody.

Otways fugitive to be extradited

Karen Matthews   |  October 26th, 2011

A TATTOOED 48-year-old fugitive, on the run from NSW police for three years, will be extradited to Sydney to face allegations of child pornography, fraud and sex offending.

Josiah El Joash was arrested at Apollo Bay last week, after being recognised by an off-duty police officer.

During an appearance in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Detective Senior Constable Darren Cairns of Northern Beaches Command, NSW, said he had two warrants for the arrest of El Joash. He said one matter related to an indecent assault on a child and the other for inciting a person under-16 to commit an act of indecency.

Sen-Constable Cairns said El Joash was also the subject of investigations into child pornography and fraud.

He said that during a raid on El Joash’s house in December 2008, police found and seized a computer containing 1423 images of child pornography.

He said the indecent assault arrest warrant related to an incident involving a 16-year-old girl who attended El Joash’s business to get her lip pierced.

He said the other warrant related to a 13-year-old female who, after having her tongue pierced, was asked by El Joash to perform a sex act on him.

The officer told the court that when El Joash failed to appear at a Sydney court on January 7, 2009, the charges were heard in his absence and both were found proven.

Sen-Constable Cairns said that in 2009, El Joash’s partner reported him missing, telling police that after two failed suicide attempts, he had walked into the bush and not been seen again.

“When he went missing El Joash left behind his business, possessions and his bank account had not been touched,” he said.

“When arrested at Apollo Bay, he had changed his physical appearance dramatically.

“He was wearing makeup to cover his facial tattoos and had grown his hair long.”

Simon Northeast, for El Joash, submitted that if bailed, his client would be able to find his own way back to NSW as he was anxious to sort the matters out.

But Magistrate Michael Coghlan was unconvinced and bail was refused.

The police application to extradite El Joash back to Sydney Central Court was granted.
