Paedophile dentist banned

Updated November 30, 2011 09:27:52

A convicted Newcastle paedophile has been banned from practising as a dentist for nearly a decade.

In 2009 former Hamilton dentist Ashleigh Edward Jarrold was found guilty of eight child sex offences.

He is serving a minimum jail term of five-and-a-half years and will be eligible for parole in 2015.

The Dental Tribunal has now banned him from applying for registration until 2020.

The tribunal said it was profoundly disturbed by Jarrold’s conduct, which amounted to the torture of children and the enjoyment of their pain.

It said he is unlikely to ever be a suitable person to hold registration as a dentist.

Pedophile dentist Ashleigh Edward Jarrold’s sentence nearly doubled

CONVICTED pedophile Ashleigh Edward Jarrold had his non-parole period almost doubled yesterday after the Court of Criminal Appeal found the former Hamilton dentist’s sentence was too lenient.

Jarrold was not before the court in Sydney when the decision was handed down.

He was sentenced last year to five years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of three years after he pleaded guilty to eight charges relating to historical child sexual assaults and child pornography and grooming offences committed last year.

That sentence was increased yesterday to seven years and five months’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 5? years.

He will now be eligible for parole in March 2015.

Jarrold was charged in October 2008 with indecently assaulting two boys in the 1970s.

He initially pleaded not guilty.

However, he changed those pleas on the eve of his trial after he was charged with the child pornography and grooming offences last September.

Jarrold saved online conversations he had from 2003 onwards where he gave detailed descriptions of sex acts he claimed to have carried out with boys involving torture and bodily waste, Newcastle District Court previously heard.

He told one man that he obtained sexual pleasure from children screaming or whimpering in pain and masturbated during live web-cam recordings with an English teenager.

During one online chat, Jarrold wrote: “Have to kill them so they wouldn’t [go to the police].”

He later wrote: “Don’t think I could actually kill anyone . . . but the rest would be fun.”

Jarrold also wrote about a teenager who had lunch at Jarrold’s home.

He said a group of men had sex with the teenager, who told police he was 17 at the time.

Paedophile dentist removed from registration list

The Dental Board of New South Wales has removed the name of a Newcastle dentist from its list of registered practitioners, blaming a technical glitch for the convicted paedophile’s apparent re-registration.

Up until this week, Hamilton dentist Ashleigh Edward Jarrold was listed on the board’s website as being registered and fit to practice until the end of this year.

His registration was due to expire last month – three months after he was sentenced to a maximum five years jail for child sex offences.

After inquiries by the ABC, Jarrold’s name was deleted from the Dental Board’s website yesterday, with a spokeswoman saying a computer glitch is to blame for the apparent re-registration.

To pass registration dentists must provide character references and list serious criminal offences.

For them to be deregistered there must be disciplinary proceedings against them, but the Health Care Complaints Commission says there are no such proceedings against Jarrold.

The board is yet to say if it accepted Jarrold’s registration payment fee, or if the technical glitch affected the records of other dentists.

Hamilton dentist Ashleigh Jarrold in net sex sting

HAMILTON dentist Ashleigh Edward Jarrold tried to organise a sexual liaison with a 15-year-old boy while awaiting trial for child sex offences committed in the 1970s, a statement tendered to Newcastle Local Court said.

Detectives posed as the 15-year-old boy to catch Jarrold.

Jarrold, 57, pleaded guilty yesterday to five charges relating to sexually explicit conversations he had online and grooming a boy for sexual activity.

The charges, plus five other offences that will be taken into account when he is sentenced, were adjourned to Newcastle District Court today where Jarrold is expected to plead guilty to the offences from the 1970s.

He was charged with those matters last October.

Jarrold was arrested again on September 17 after police conducted surveillance on his home and intercepted his internet service provider, a statement said.

He was refused bail.

Jarrold’s barrister, Peter Harper, did not object to the statement being tendered, but indicated that some of the details might be disputed when Jarrold was sentenced.

Surveillance material shows Jarrold masturbating on a number of occasions while he chatted online with the person he thought was a 15-year-old boy, the statement said.

Jarrold told the boy on September 3 that he could pick him up from school during lunch and they could have sex at a hotel.

He also sent the boy a photo of his partner naked and told the boy of sexual encounters he had had including one with another 15-year-old boy and a group of men.

Jarrold later told the boy that his partner did not want him to meet the boy because of his upcoming court case.

Five days later, Jarrold said they should meet after the court case.

In other online conversations saved on Jarrold’s computer between 2003 and 2008, he discussed child sexual abuse, rape, murder and defecation.

Jarrold sent photos of a male he claimed to be 16 to a person he chatted with online.

The photos were of the teenager performing various sex acts with men. In one photo, the teenager is over Jarrold’s knee.

In another online conversation, a man told Jarrold of sexual encounters he had with family members aged 11 and 14.

Jarrold asked the other person to supply photos of the sex acts.
