Knife rapist jailed until 2014

Updated 10 Mar 2009, 12:35pm

An Adelaide court has heard that a rapist subjected two Riverland women to a terrifying and horrific ordeal.

Trevor William Wilson, 27, had pleaded guilty to serious criminal trespass and rape.

District Court judge Steven Millsteed said Wilson broke into the women’s house at Berri in December 2005 and raped them at knifepoint.

Judge Millsteed sentenced Wilson to 10 years in jail, backdated to February last year.

He will be eligible for parole in 2014.

Paul John Stanley jailed for 11 years on three counts of rape, two while armed with a knife

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy had his dream of joining the Royal Australian Navy shattered after revealing he had been brutally raped by an HIV-infected sex predator, a court has been told.

Paul John Stanley, then aged 38, handed the young teen a potential death sentence when he repeatedly raped and abused the boy – at times while holding a knife to his throat – during a sleep over at a mate’s Brisbane home on October 2, 2010.

The Brisbane District Court was told Stanley – who had been aware he was HIV positive for several years – made no attempt to protect the boy ” from the very real prospect” of catching the disease during the prolonged and brutal attack.

Prosecutor Ken Spinaze said in the wake of the attack the teenager applied to join the Navy, but was rejected after revealing he may have contracted HIV as a result of Stanley’s abuse.

Stanley, now aged 40, was jailed for 11 1/2-years on Friday on three counts of rape, one count each of assault with intent to commit rape and deprivation of liberty and four of sexual assault – two of those whilst armed with a knife.

The court was told Stanley was convicted after a jury trial in May and was yet to answer a charge of exposing another victim to a communicable disease.

Mr Spinaze said Stanley “mercilessly took advantage” of the 16-year-old – who had earlier consumed alcohol – and subjected the boy to a “number of prolonged, degrading sexual acts in a brazen and humiliating way”.

“(And Stanley) did nothing to protect the (boy) from transmission of that (HIV) disease.”

Mr Spinaze said the boy had to endure not only the horrific abuse, but also the shame and anguish of being denied his dream of joining the Navy.

He said Stanley also had a previous sex conviction for stalking a man from a public toilet block to his place of work and then exposing himself.

Lawyers for Stanley said the convicted sex fiend was in poor health and heavily medicated as a result of his potentially fatal illness.

Judge Deborah Richards, in sentencing, noted that during the persistent attack Stanley used a knife, threats and drugs in a bid to subdue the boy and “have his way with him”.

At the same time Stanley was being sentenced, Queensland’s highest court was handing down a decision rejecting his appeal against the convictions recorded in May.

The Court of Appeal in Brisbane dismissed Stanley’s appeal, saying he had “failed to demonstrate that the jury’s verdicts were unsafe and unsatisfactory.”

Convicted murderer Kenneth Cannon sentenced to extra seven years jail for 1986 Wagga Wagga rape

By Jessica Kidd

Posted yesterday at 2:14pm

A convicted murderer has been sentenced to an extra seven years in prison for raping a teenage girl in the New South Wales Riverina almost 30 years ago.

Kenneth Barry Cannon, 55, was sentenced to seven years in jail for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl at knife point in Wagga Wagga in 1986.

He appeared by video link in Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court this morning to be sentenced over the historical crime.

The court heard Cannon threatened the girl with a knife, forced her to the ground in Bolton Park and took her jeans off.

The then 26-year-old Cannon told the girl “don’t make a sound unless you want to get cut”.

When the attack was over, he told her “I don’t care if you report this or not, it’s just one of those things”, the court heard.

As Judge Deborah Payne handed down her sentence, she told the court the girl immediately reported the attack and was taken to hospital for examination.

Judge Payne said semen found in the girl’s underpants was matched to a sample of Cannon’s DNA in 2008.

Cannon pleaded guilty to the attack last year.

Cannon has continued to reoffend, judge says

He is already serving a lengthy prison sentence for the rape and murder of Wagga Wagga teenager Sally Ann Jones in 1987, and the rape of a 16-year-old girl in 1990.

In today’s ruling, Judge Payne said the seriousness of Cannon’s offences meant he was not entitled to leniency.

“He has continued to reoffend in a most serious way,” she said.

“This must have been a terrifying experience for the victim.

“She was walking home at night or in the early hours of the morning and she had every right to do so.”

In addition to the sentence of seven years, Judge Payne also suggested Cannon receive treatment for sexual deviancy while he remains in prison.

The ruling takes Cannon’s total sentence to more than 32 years and seven months, but he will be eligible for parole in December 2018.

He will remain in protective custody until then.

Sally Jones’s killer pleads guilty to rape of another Wagga teenager

By Ken Grimson

Aug. 6, 2014, 6 p.m.

A MAN found guilty of one of Wagga’s most infamous murders – the sex killing of 18-year-old Sally Jones in 1987 – has pleaded guilty to the knifepoint rape of another teenager five months earlier.

Kenneth Barry Cannon pleaded guilty to sexual assault in Wagga Local Court on Wednesday.

He was committed for sentence in Wagga District Court at its next sittings starting September 15.

A “cold case” review of the rape of a 15-year-old in Bolton Park off Edward Street on November 8, 1986, led to the arrest of 54-year-old Cannon in February.

A 21-year jail maximum sentence handed down in August, 1991, for the murder of Miss Jones expired in 2012 and he is currently serving a sentence for the rape of a third victim – a 16-year-old girl on May 12, 1990.

Cannon used a knife as he preyed on young women in Wagga’s central business district in the early hours of the morning.

Sally Jones was last seen alive leaving a Baylis Street night spot called Choices in the early hours of Easter Sunday, April 19, 1987.

Her body was found in the Murrumbidgee River at the Wiradjuri Reserve later that morning after Cannon told police he had discovered a pair of black boots and then drag marks along the beach leading to the river, as well as blood stains on the boots and sand.

Cannon, a 27-year-old mechanic at the time, told police he made the grim discovery while out jogging, but his trial was told he had never been jogging in his life.

Sally’s body was discovered with 20 stab wounds.

A DNA profile of blood supplied by Cannon exactly matched a DNA profile of semen found on underpants on Sally’s body.

A DNA profile taken from the underpants of the 15-year-old victim in 1986 also matches a profile taken from Cannon, according to agreed facts tendered to Wagga Local Court on Wednesday.

The clothing was kept by police for 27 years waiting for a breakthrough in the unsolved case.

According to the facts, the 15-year-old was walking along Edward Street past Bolton Park about 3.50am on November 8, 1986, when Cannon approached her.

After placing his arm around the girl, he said: “Don’t make a sound unless you want to get cut”.

According to the facts, the girl then realised Cannon was holding a knife with a 15cm serrated edge against her throat.

Cannon forced the girl into Bolton Park where he raped her and then let her go, saying: “I don’t care if you report this or not, it’s just one of these things”.

The girl reported the incident to police and her clothing was kept for forensic examination.

The facts said a police cold case project team with the Department of Health’s Division of Analytical Laboratories completed a review of the police investigation into the attack some months ago, leading to the DNA match and Cannon’s arrest in February.

In September, 1991, the month after he was jailed for Sally Jones’s murder, Cannon pleaded guilty to the May 12, 1990, rape of the 16-year-old girl.

She was snatched off Morrow Street near the Victory Memorial Gardens about 12.30am and raped at knifepoint in the vicinity of the Civic Theatre and the levee bank near the Riverina Playhouse.

Cannon was sentenced to prison until August 29, 2020, for that crime.

The rape and murder of Sally Jones was one of the darkest chapters in Wagga’s recent history and created an atmosphere of fear in the community.

In sentencing Cannon, Justice Studdert described the murder as savage, most dreadful and most vicious.
