Paedophile paramedic sentenced to 13 years’ jail for sexual abuse of 22 girls across three states

Updated 5 May 2017, 6:28pm

A former Queensland ambulance officer has been sentenced to 13 years in jail for “depraved” sexual abuse of 22 young girls across several states over a 10-year period.

The victims of 49-year-old Jason David Brooker were in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, with the youngest being 11 years old.

Brooker, who was between 38 and 47 years of age at the time of offending, contacted young girls via social media sites Kik, Tagged and Facebook using the name ‘Jaz’, ‘David Bourne’ or ‘David Brook’.

In the District Court in Toowoomba on Tuesday, Brooker pleaded guilty to 57 charges, including maintaining a relationship with a child under 16, carnal knowledge, indecent treatment and making and possessing child exploitation material.

The offending was carried out from Brooker’s home in Warwick on Queensland’s Southern Downs between 2005 and 2015, when one victim raised the alarm and police raided his property.

The court heard Brooker often paid for mobile phone credit for the young girls or offered to “get them into modelling” in exchange for naked photographs, and threatened to release the photos on the internet if the girls did not comply with requests for more explicit material.

Offender videoed sex with 14yo girl

Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Kelso told the court the most serious offending was involving a 14-year-old girl, who he lured via social media pretending to be a 16-year-old boy.

After several webcam chats where Brooker asked the girl to take off her clothes, the pair met multiple times including at a park and a hotel in the Brisbane suburb of Brookside.

Ms Kelso told the court the girl had not told her parents where she was going.

“[Brooker] filmed some of those interactions,” Ms Kelso said.

“In that footage he can be seen undressing the complainant.”

The pair then had sexual intercourse, which was also recorded on video.

‘I was made to feel like a disgusting human being’

During police raids of Brooker’s Warwick home in 2015, officers found a disc containing 83 photos of the girl in states of undress.

The court was read a victim impact statement from that girl, who is now an adult.

“[I] feel sick because of the visual memories,” the statement read.

“I feared for my life and my family’s too — I was made to feel like a disgusting human being.”

Ms Kelso said Brooker would request naked pictures and send pictures of his own genitalia to other girls.

The victims often found out the person they were talking to was not a 16-year-old boy when Brooker turned on his own webcam.

Ms Kelso said Brooker would often tell his victims he loved. If they refused his advances, he would threaten the victims with knowing where they lived.

“If the complainants became reluctant or started to ignore the defendant, he became angry,” she said.

“Where he had provided them money, he would tell them he felt he’d been ripped off.”

Ms Kelso said the most disturbing thing about Brooker’s conduct was the “meticulous” nature of the thousands of photos and videos in his child exploitation collection, found during the police raids.

Some of the exploitation material was of children as young as three years old.

“Not only was is stored electronically, it was also stored on CDs identified with the girls name, age and locations,” Ms Kelso said.

The raids also uncovered stolen prescription drugs and uniforms from the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS).

Brooker left the QAS during the 10 years of offending and began to work for a private firm as a paramedic.

Offender wrote apology letter, court told

Brooker’s defence lawyer David Jones told the court his client had not shared any of the child exploitation material he created.

He said Brooker’s conduct was largely inexplicable, but he had written a letter of apology and was on the road to rehabilitation.

In sentencing, Judge Deborah Richards told the court one incident involved threatening a young child with harm.

“You said: ‘If you don’t send me nudes I’ll track down your address and hurt your family’ — she was 11 years old,” the judge said.

Judge Richards said Brooker offended with the hope of having each of the girls have sex with him.

“You did make admissions … but downplayed the criminality of your actions on many occasions,” she said.

“This was persistent, depraved behaviour over a long period of time.”

Judge Deborah Richards chose not to label Brooker a serious violent offender.

He will be eligible to apply for parole in January 2021, six years after he was taken into custody.

Justice 40 years on for abused Vic Scout

Rick Goodman

AAP / 2 hours ago

For child abuse victim Paul, the big clunking machine that is the Victorian justice system has finally clunked his way, 40 years after a Scout leader molested him.

Paul, whose surname hasn’t been used for legal reasons, was about 10 when indecently assaulted by Chris Edmonson in Melbourne in the mid-1970s.

Edmonson grabbed the boy’s groin after telling him he would get a Scout badge if he turned around and closed his eyes.

Paul, now 53, first complained to police in 1997 but little came of it as there wasn’t enough evidence, he said.

But his case gained traction after he spoke to the Child Abuse Royal Commission about four years ago.

It all culminated in Edmonson, 62, being jailed on Wednesday after pleading guilty to indecently assaulting Paul and two other Scouts.

Paul says he feels exhausted, but relieved and grateful.

“My wife is hanging on by her fingernails. My friends have been put through the ringer. I’m completely tapped out,” he said.

“But we got there.”

He said the path to justice had been brutal but it was one he had to tread, because he was “haunted” by what had happened.

“It’s like a huge, clunking, scary, giant machine, but it actually clunked in my direction this time,” Paul said of the justice system.

“And this has now given me the passport to live the rest of my life.”

Paul gave evidence at a private hearing of the Child Abuse Royal Commission of which he was full of praise.

“I felt so listened to and looked after,” Paul said.

“I’m not a really political person but … that’s about the best thing any government has done for me.”

He painfully gave evidence at two failed trials for Edmonson, one of which was scuttled when a juror fell asleep.

Edmonson, a convicted pedophile, pleaded guilty after two other people joined the case, claiming to have been molested.

He was already in jail for abusing children in Queensland and Victoria but had six months added to his term for indecently assaulting the three boy Scouts.

“You were in a position of trust in relation to those young boys,” County Court Judge Richard Smith said in sentencing.

“They were young and no doubt looked up to you.”

Edmonson will be eligible for parole in May 2019.

Edmondson has pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault & has had four months added to his existing jail sentence.

in the late 1970s and 80s.

Christopher Edmondson, 59, admitted abusing four siblings, their cousin and his step-daughter on multiple

occasions between 1979 and 1987 when he was an assistant Scout leader at Warrandyte.

The Victorian County Court was told that Edmondson befriended one boy and was welcomed into the family

The victims were aged between seven and 15 years old.

In sentencing, Judge Bill Stuart told Edmondson “it was a frightening aspect that you sexually abused all four

Rapist Peter Scott Griffin to be released despite past breaches of orders

February 18, 2015 5:25PM

A RAPIST who has repeatedly broken supervision rules while out of jail will again be released into the community.

Peter Scott Griffin, 46, served a 13-year sentence for attacking three women in the street in 1998, forcing them to perform oral sex on him and raping one victim.

He was released from jail in 2012 but put on a strict supervision order.

He was jailed again in June last year after he lost his temper with his supervisors because they put him on a 24-hour curfew when his online romance soured.

His supervisors from Corrective Services were worried he hadn’t admitted to his internet girlfriend that he was a convicted sex offender.

The girlfriend was set to fly to Queensland to meet him.

His parole officers were worried he would stop taking drugs aimed at reducing his sex drive.

After a hearing to decide whether he should be kept behind bars Justice Martin Daubney ruled Mr Griffin should be released because there was no longer any danger he would breach his supervision order.

The June incident was his third breach. The other two breaches included being caught masturbating in a shopping centre carpark in January 2013 and losing his temper with police last year.

  • February 14, 1998: Grabs 17yo girl from behind and drags her from a North Rockhampton street at 8.15pm, over a guard rail onto a bush hill. He sexually assaults her and restrains her by choking.
  • May 24, 1998: 23yo woman is followed as she walks between two hotels in the Rocky CBD at 12.25pm and attacked from behind. Griffin flees when two men on a hotel balcony yell out.
  • May 24, 1998: About an hour later an 18yo woman is punched to the ground and raped.
  • July 21, 1998: Young woman is robbed and sexually assaulted on a Rockhampton street. Griffin restrains her by choking. Police take down a number plate and catch him.
  • July 8, 2011: Griffin was put on a continuing detention order, beyond his fulltime release date after 13 years’ jail.
  • October 29, 2012: Released on a DPSOA supervision order with strict conditions.
  • January 3, 2013: Contravened condition not to reoffend when a woman saw him masturbating in a public car park at North Rockhampton.

Brett Peter Cowan: Daniel Morcombe’s killer had long history of preying on children

Fri 14 Mar 2014, 7:50am

Daniel Morcombe’s killer Brett Peter Cowan is a serial predator with an extensive history of sexually abusing children.

The 44-year-year told an inquest into Daniel’s disappearance that by the time he turned 18 he had already preyed on up to 30 children.

He said his offending stretched back to when he was about nine or 10 years of age.

However, he was first convicted of a child sex offence in 1989 over the molestation of a seven-year-old boy in the public toilets of a Queensland playground.

He was sentenced to two years for indecent dealing.

Four years later while living in a Darwin caravan park, Cowan molested a six-year-old boy in a violent attack which left the child with a punctured lung.

Cowan left the boy to die in an old car in bushland before the naked, dazed and bleeding child staggered into a service station for help.

After initially denying any involvement in the attack, Cowan confessed after police told him they had found DNA evidence linking him to the crime.

In September 1993, Cowan pleaded guilty to gross indecency, grievous bodily harm and deprivation of liberty and was sentenced to seven years in jail.

After his release from prison on parole in 1998 he moved to the Sunshine Coast to be close to relatives and soon became involved in the Christian Outreach Church.

He met Tracey Moncrieff through the church and in 1999 they later married and had a child.

The couple were living in Beerwah at the time Daniel went missing. They divorced in 2004.

Cowan was an early suspect in Daniel’s disappearance and was first interviewed by police two weeks after the 13-year-old went missing. Officers interviewed him again in 2005.

For an unexplained reason, Cowan changed his name to Shaddo N-Unyah Hunter between 2003 and a 2011 inquest into Daniel’s disappearance, at which he was called to give evidence.

“I had nothing to do with Daniel’s disappearance, nothing at all,” he told the court.

However, shortly after Cowan’s appearance at the inquest he told undercover police officers that he picked Daniel up from a bus stop to “have fun” with him.

He told the officers, who were posing as criminal gang members, that he drove Daniel to a demountable building on a macadamia farm in a secluded bushland area in Beerwah with the intention of molesting him.

He said he invited Daniel in for a drink of water and tried to pull his pants down.

When Daniel said “Oh no” and began to struggle, Cowan said he choked him with his arm around his neck.

Cowan told the officers he disposed of Daniel’s body in an old sand mining area.

Daniel’s bone fragments were later found at the site.

Cowan was arrested and charged with Daniel’s murder in August 2011 and was found guilty in March 2014.

Man admits to Crown Street Mall rape

Nov. 5, 2014, 10:08 p.m.

A Queensland man has confessed to raping a woman in Wollongong’s Crown Street Mall 13 years ago.

Port Kembla Local Court heard Benjamin Scott Boyd was living in the Illawarra in 2001 when he violently raped the woman in the grounds of St Andrews Presbyterian Church in the early hours of July 20.

Boyd was not linked to the crime and wasn’t charged until August 2004, a few months after his arrest on unrelated sexual assault matters in Orange.

He was granted bail but failed to turn up to Wollongong court in November to face the rape charge, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police were told he had fled to the United Kingdom, with documents revealing he had left the country in September – a month after the rape charge was laid.

The case was unresolved for almost a decade until NSW Police received a phone call from officers in Queensland in August this year saying they had arrested Boyd on the outstanding warrant.

In Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday, Boyd entered a plea of guilty to one charge of sexual intercourse without consent.

A draft set of facts tendered during the proceedings claims the female victim, then aged 34 years, was sitting in the mall around 3.45am when she noticed the then 18-year-old Boyd speaking with a man.

When the conversation ended, Boyd approached her, asked for directions, and tried to chat her up.

The woman brushed off his advances and walked away.

Boyd followed her and continued to ask her questions of an intimate nature.

As the pair passed the laneway leading to the church grounds, Boyd grabbed the woman by the wrists.

She struggled to break free, but was unable to do so.

Boyd then indecently assaulted the woman twice before dragging her by the feet along the passageway and raping her.

The woman later told police Boyd had said to her ‘‘this won’t take long’’, then afterwards, said ‘‘you don’t mess with the 777’’ as he walked away.

Boyd was remanded in custody to appear in the district court for sentencing later this month.
