Search for missing pedophile yachtie

NT NEWS   |  November 18th, 2011

POLICE will continue searching off the Top End coast for a convicted pedophile who has been missing since late October.

Darwin watch commander Craig Ryan said police were searching for the man around the Vernon Islands and Melville Island from the south central tip of Cape Gambier to the central east coast area of Tinganoo Bay.

Kenneth Roy Lang’s 12m catamaran Screamer was spotted beached in mangroves in Chambers Bay 100km northeast of Darwin on Tuesday.

Lang was the first pedophile to be convicted for sending child pornography from his mobile phone in 2008.

Crim had keys to kids’ rooms

The Cairns Post

CONVICTED sex offender Kenneth Roy Lang was working at a Port Douglas youth hostel and had keys to rooms where children stayed, it emerged yesterday.

A guest at the YHA-affiliated Port o’ Call hostel recognised Lang from yesterday’s report in The Cairns Post.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, said Lang had worked at the hostel as a cleaner during her recent stay.

On Wednesday, Lang was convicted of transmitting child pornography on his mobile phone. He also was convicted in 1992 of sexually penetrating a child.

The hostel guest was shocked to think that a sex offender could be working in a place where school groups of 10 to 12-year-old children often stayed.

“I’m sure the parents of those children would not be incredibly happy if they knew what he’d done,” she said.

She described Lang as talkative and friendly, particularly to young girls staying at the hostel.

“His opening line was to ask people if they wanted to come on to his boat.”

Port o’ Call management yesterday issued a repeated “no comment” to queries about Lang’s employment at their Port St premises.

A second Port o’ Call guest confirmed that Lang worked at the hostel.

“We spent time at the youth hostel for a few weeks and that picture was definitely him,” the woman said.

“We knew he was called Ken and the picture on the front page was very clear.”

She also said she was shocked to realise a convicted sex offender had access to young people’s rooms.

“He’s got keys to the rooms,” she said.

The shocked woman said: “We shared the newspaper with somebody who works there and they knew it was him.

“They were quite easygoing and dismissive about it.

“They said, ‘Oh yeah, we knew about that – he’s worked here year after year’.”

Lang’s yacht The Screamer was seen leaving its Dickson Inlet mooring and heading out of Port Douglas yesterday.

Lang’s sentencing conditions require him to provide a DNA sample to the Australian Federal Police next week.

It is understood the AFP is aware of his current location.

Lang’s details are expected to be added to a national sex offender register in coming weeks.

Queensland Police said Lang had up to 28 days to provide his details.

It’s a sick joke

The Cairns Post

THIS is a smirk that will revolt any parent.

After being convicted of transmitting child pornography – so graphic prosecutors would not disclose the details – Port Douglas pensioner Kenneth Roy Lang, 70, sits laughing outside Cairns District Court yesterday.

Just hours earlier, he was sentenced to 12 months’ jail but was released immediately because he had served four months in custody awaiting his court date.

He had pleaded guilty to five counts of transmitting child pornography material and two counts of transmitting child abuse material, after sending 27 sexually explicit text messages to a woman in Cairns while he was holidaying in Thailand in December 2006.

It also emerged that in 1992, Lang pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual penetration of a child aged 10 to 16 years.

On that occasion, he served six months of an 18-month jail sentence.

Yesterday, the court heard Lang told police he had not touched a young person in Australia or overseas since his previous conviction in Melbourne.

He is the first Australian convicted for sending child pornography from his mobile phone.

Lang has also been ordered to submit his DNA to a national police database and will be placed on the national sex offenders’ register.

Commonwealth prosecutor Jane Bentley did not read the detail of the text messages to the court but said they included, “graphic descriptions of the defendant engaging in sexual intercourse with Thai children aged between 12 and 15 years”.

In sentencing, Judge Sarah Bradley also refused to read the content of the messages to the court because they were “revolting”.

“They are a graphic depiction of sexual and violent abuse of children,” Judge Bradley said.

Lang was arrested by Australian Federal Police at Cairns airport in July last year, when he was attempting to travel back to Thailand.

Ms Bentley said Lang admitted sending the messages and said they were “pure fantasy and phone sex”.

“He said he knew images of child pornography were illegal but he didn’t know ‘this sort of thing’ was illegal,” she said.

In his defence, barrister Sandra Pearson said her client sent the text messages in response to messages from a woman he had met through a personal ad.

Ms Pearson said the woman, who later went to the police about the content of the messages, sent an SMS to the defendant telling him to “tell it filthy, the filthier the better”.

“He (Lang) can see how right-minded members of the community would see the messages as abhorrent,” Ms Pearson said.

She also told the court that the media attention her client received as a result of the child porn charges meant he had been verbally abused and physically assaulted on several occasions, and would likely have to leave the Far North.

Lang was also given a three-year good behaviour bond.

Pensioner jailed in child porn SMS first

Updated Wed Jul 9, 2008 3:07pm AEST

A far north Queensland pensioner has become the first person in Australia to be convicted under federal laws for sending child pornography in an SMS message on a mobile phone.

Kenneth Roy Lang, 70, from Port Douglas, was arrested at Cairns airport in 2006 after he sent seven sexually explicit images of children to a friend in Australia during a holiday in Thailand.

Lang was charged with five counts of transmitting child porn and two counts of transmitting child abuse material.

In the Cairns District Court, Judge Sarah Bradley described the images as “disgusting” and sentenced him to 12 months jail, suspended for time already served.

She also took into account Lang’s guilty plea and prior convictions for three sex offences in Victoria.

Judge Bradley also granted an application for Lang to be included on a national database of sex offenders.
